Vaccinations Hello, Since my little girl was diagnosed with Insulinoma in November, I've been trying to figure out what the cause could be. (insulinoma is a cancerous tumor that affects blood sugar levels to go to very low levels, while secreting Insulin). From what I've read, many people and holistic vets believe the reason that dogs develop cancer is because of vaccines. I always assumed vaccines were supposed to help, not cause problems. I was in contact with a holistic vet, and he stated that under NO circumstances should Tink have any form of vaccinations - and holistic vets are against vaccines... Apparently, when a dog has cancer or a tumor, you are NOT supposed to vaccinate because it will cause issues. So this makes me think... I hate to think that I caused her getting this disease by her yearly vaccinations (Kennel cough, rabies). I'm just curious on others thoughts. It seems like a double-edged sword - it would be terrible for a pup to get sick because they were not vaccinated, but what about the long term side effects? |
The benefits of vaccinations 1000x out weighs the risks or costs of not doing it. |
I'm sorry your pup has suffered with some serious health issues. Your right to be concerned about any unnecessary exposure to any stressers on her immune system. The science has been out for almost two decades that annual vaccines is no longer recommended. If any vet is doing annual vaccines he/she is not doing what is in the best interest of the pups. There are several researchers who have studies proving the duration of immunity is a minimum of 7 years and quite possibly for life, when the pup has had the required core puppy shots (distemper & parvo) and the one year booster. It might help to read some articles pertaining to this important subject. Here is just one by Dr Schultz.... I really hope that the veterinary community can soon figure out what is best. (I hate to think they push vaccines solely to have a guaranteed annual form of income instead of the pets best interest ...) Quote:
Luckily I had that conversation with my vet, she said that she would only push for a rabies vaccine if she was a biter (which she's not) and said she would take care of it thankfully. I'm happy to hear your little ones are happy and healthy. :) |
I grew up with a dog who only had his puppy shots that was it and the day he was put to sleep at 10 years old he was eaten up with cancer so I highly doubt it's vaccines. A dog is not safe with out at least there puppy shots and one year booster at least, as well as the your states rabies law. Every one thinks my dog is an inside dog they can't get sick or bitten by a rabid animal. Think again certain things come in to the house on your shoes and all it takes with rabies is a second for a rabid animal to bite yours and bam your dog has to be put to sleep because there is no cure. The state will also take you dog and quarantine them if they don't have a rabies shot and bite someone. I think there is a nice spot right between over vaccinating and under vaccinated. Not a fan of holistic vets until all things have been tried with normal vetting. But I know nothing about your dogs health so that would maybe be something to talk to a few regular vets about. I just think vaccinating for healthy dogs is very important. I'm sorry about you little girls diagnoses. |
Vaccination My little guy was diagnosed with GME. We stopped all vaccinations. Talk intently with your vet. My personal opinion is, if she is a house dog and you are with her on a leash when outside at all times under you control she would be fine without vaccinas. |
I wouldn't vaccinate an actively sick dog either if I were you, especially cancer. I would seek exemptions and it looks like you already are doing that, so that's great. Rabies vaccine is one of the most potent, so I'd even look into exempting from that one too. It's so tough / impossible to tell if vaccines had anything to do w/ her current state of health. Whatever the case, do not blame yourself, at all, for getting those previous vaccines! |
Thank you all for your input - maybe within time the vet community can get a better idea of what causes cancer in these little guys... I'm glad that her vet is not pushing her to get and vaccines. I did stop taking her to the groomer because I'm paranoid she could contract something there. (That being said, I need to get better with my yorkie grooming skills - Tink's got some "Grinch Feet" going on:) ) I guess I will never know what caused this, and like my vet said, it's just an unfortunate part in life. However, she's a happy little girl today so that's what matters for the time being. :) Thank you all. |
