| Should I get a male Yorkie? Hi all! I currently have a 4.5 pound female Yorkie and 2 ragdoll female cats and one male ragdoll cat. The cats all get along with my female Yorkie who is one and half years old. I am seriously contemplating getting a male Yorkie puppy and am just seeking some advice. Anyone start of with just one Yorkie and now have more? Do you ever regret the addition(s)? Is it good/bad to add a male to the mix? Financially the new addition would not be a problem. I am just a bit nervous because I had my cats first, and when I got the female Yorkie she just fit right in and we had no problems, and she was SO easy to potty train. I really did get lucky and I am a little worried that maybe I wouldn't get so lucky again! Do you think this would be a good idea or bad idea? My dog comes with me to work everyday, and so would the new puppy. All of my pets are fixed. |

| Well it could be a crap shoot because you never know what kind of personality the new addition will have. However, if all things check out medically, then training the male yorkie to fit in would be what you would have to do. I had to train my new female yorkie to not chase the cat. They hated each other and they did not get along. But with a lot of patience and training they were able to co exist. They weren't best friends but they didn't kill each other. If you get a new male especially a puppy (who are very playful) training should (hopefully) fix any behavioral issues. |

YT 1000 Club Member | Do it! do it! Lol. I started with a female bulldog, added a male yorkie, and I'll be adding a female yorkie in May. I've never had a cat before tho so I'm not sure how they'd react. Honestly I think it all depends on the individual dog/cat. Some pets play together alot and some just tolerate each other sometimes it's a toss up. Good luck with your decision! |

| Awwww...I started with a male Yorkie who was 14 months old and added a female Yorkie the same age as him three months later, then was blessed with a slightly older girl a couple years after. I wouldn't change a thing. Oh, and my prissiest Yorkie? Why, that would be my mommy's boy...LOL.

| Your home sounds a lot like mine! I have three cats (one persian, one himalayan and one maine coon) and two yorkies. I have a male and a female yorkie and they both do well with the cats. I would say go for it if you can afford it!

YT 500 Club Member | I started out with two huge male cats, and added two baby female yorkies, which worked out perfectly, until tragedy took my Marley away at 6 1/2 months. So then I just had her sister, Izzy, and after a while I felt bad for her since she no longer had a playmate. So I adopted Toby. He was 4 1/2 months old ( but huge! She was 6 lbs and he already around 8 lbs. that's big for a yorkie!) he had so much energy it was exhausting. And sometimes their playing got way too rough. And it was chaos and hectic because he never stopped moving and running and stealing things and chewing, and pouncing on the disgruntled cats. But now that he's been neutered he has mellowed out enough that the cats don't hate him anymore. They swat at him half heartedly in slow motion, almost out of habit, really. And then they just stare at him until he licks their face and walks off. Izzy now holds her own and actually gets the best of him so play fighting isn't stressful anymore. My only complaint now is he has a chronic problem with marking, which getting fixed did not subdue one bit. I was hoping he would stop that . But really, through all the chaos and disruption and steam cleaning it took to get to this point, I still wouldn't trade him for anything. So as long as you realize the possible down sides to adding a boy and are willing and patient enough to work through it, I say do it! You never know what you're gonna get in a yorkie... He may turn out to be an angel. But even if his halo is a little chewed up and crooked my guess is he'll end up owning your heart regardless. I love my gigantic yorkshire terrorist. He made life comical for me. Just get him young and start training him before he trains you and you'll be fine. Good luck! |

| Maybe you can consider adopting a older yorkie instead of a puppy? Anywhere between 1-3 years old since they've already developed their personality and you can find out if they'd get along with cats and other dogs. We brought Zoey into our family when Magnus was a year old. Both have completely different personalities. They're not best of friends but they don't hate each other either. As for regrets... It's twice the work/responsibilities but don't regret anything! |
