| Constantly Hungry Cody, weight 12.6 lbs, age 4 y/o next month. 7AM I feed him 1/3 cup Natural Balance limited ingredients, Bison / sweet potato dry food he wolfs that down in seconds. 9AM he is crying, whimpering, whining, begging for more food. , I make him do a few tricks, reward with small treat. 12 noon now giving a nice portion French cut frozen beans was giving fresh cooked sliced carrots but was concerned carrots may be high in calories, regardless, he gobbles either up. 3PM he is crying, whimpering, whining, begging for more food. , I make him do a few tricks, reward with small treat. 5PM, I feed him another 1/3 cup dry food. 7PM he starts the crying, whimpering, whining, begging for more food. , I make him do a few tricks, reward with small treat. 9PM I give him a nice portion of French cut green beans. 10PM the crying and begging for more begins, I make him do a few tricks, reward with small treat. I never had a dog that was so demanding for more food. I am worried, this does not seem normal to me. Several weeks ago there was a thread about a dog being constantly hungry. There were suggestions of blood work being done for ?. I looked for that thread but cannot find it. Cody is at perfect weight for his size, I don’t want to increase his dry food and have him over weight. The amount of food to be given for dog of his weight is on the dog food label, so he is getting proper amount of food. Any advice / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

| This would make me crazy!! I can not stand to see anything running around, "complaining about" being hungry, or begging for food!! I free feed kibble....I always keep a bowl on the kitchen floor.....during the day, I will see one or the other, run in and grab a mouthful of kibble, usually bring it to my feet where I am sitting, and eat that mouthful.....then run off to engage in more play or mischievousness! I just wonder what he would do if he had a bowl down with free access to it all day...maybe he would (AFTER he got over the idea he had died and gone to heaven and hit the food jackpot!!!!) maybe he would "graze" a little all day long, which would stave off his hunger, and he would eventually end up even eating less than he does now! Maybe the brand of kibble....if you use kibble....has a "lite" or calorie control kibble you could put out.... |

| Is he overweight? The label on your food is just a guideline. If he is not overweight he may need more than what you are giving him. Metabolism can very from dog to dog. Gracie will not settle down and go to sleep if she thinks she is hungry. If she is hungry she gets fed. Sometimes she may gain a little weight in the winter because we cannot walk as much in bad weather but she will lose it as soon as the weather breaks. I also play indoor fetch with her to help deal with her activity level. Unless he has a serious weight problem I would not worry about feeding him more healthy food. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | How is his actual body condition/weight? I'll attach a picture below for you, to evaluate this. If there is true excessive hunger, you do have to wonder about thyroid, diabetes, or Cushings. So, I'd read up on those 3 things for any add'l symptoms that may be there.

YT 1000 Club Member | I used to schedule feed Rasta twice a day like you then got lazy and decided to try free feeding. The first day he ate ALL of his food right after it hit his bowl(fatty) after he realized by the third day he wouldn't be getting anything else in that bowl once the food ran out he started grazing and now a whole day's serving may last until the next morning. My MIL always says that sometimes folks "eyes are bigger than their stomachs" and they'll just eat and eat because the food is available not so much that their hungry. I'm sure this can apply to some of our yorkies. |

| My two puppies, Jewel and Bella, are only 14 weeks old. I spoil them with a Chicke, rice, and puppy food mix that they love. I leave a bowl out with kibble (Royal cain puppy food) so that if they are still hungry there free to eat. They never beg for food and i've used chicken to 75% potty train them both to a green carpet. Jewel still trys to show she's boss, but will go there. Plus they are 14 weeks old, they have accidents. I give treats for only the good potties. Bella has started to hold it until I wake up so she gets treats. Smart dogs. Bella doesn't try to be dominate at all so she trains easy. Jewel follows out of jealously for treats. Its great having sister's. |
