| Advice re: belly bands? I've never had a male dog who marked (guess I was lucky from what I've read!) so I really don't know what I'm doing here since I never even knew belly bands existed before YT sooooo................ Can you guys let me know if I'm on the right path, here? From what I understand, belly bands are supposed to change the habit of marking by disallowing the behavior for around 8 weeks? Is this right? I know it could be a permanent thing but, ideally, 8 weeks is the initial goal to see if the behavior has changed... Am I right or did I just make this up!!!! (I can't keep up with all the new info I read each day)! I'm asking because for the few seconds that Teddy is not wearing his band in the day, he still manages to mark. SO, I thought I would be even more vigilant since this is my fault, not his, and start the 8 week goal over again from today. Am I doing this right!! Help appreciated!! x |

| Has he been neutered? How old is he? I have always thought of belly bands as a necessary tool to keep urine off everything in the house, rather than a training tool to break marking! If you have a sexually mature intact male, he will mark...it is instinctive. I had ONE friend swear she had trained her little male stud to not mark in the house....I have never seen that success story first hand! Everyone that I have ever known that had an intact male, used belly bands not as a training tool to break marking behavior, but rather as a means to keep urine off the furniture! I have never talked to anyone that expected a belly band to correct marking behavior. |

Oh, this is interesting. My parents and I both had male Yorkies who didn't mark and were not neutered. HOWEVER, as soon as my parents bought a shih-Tzu, their yorkie started to mark and was then neutered at 8 years old. I know that stopped him from overtly marking but I don't know about in secret.. Teddy isn't neutered and he has never been around a female. He's 15 months old and just recently started marking which I thought was as a result of stress due to my cat always bullying him. Dunno..might have to rethink things now.

| We belly banded our new boy, Zippy, for a week or so when we first got him after that once or twice when he would lift his leg, worked for us. Two boys, both are neutered. Now, we belly band both if we leave them at the house longer than about an hour. The older one forgets he's in the house or just has a smaller holding capacity. By doing this they have free roam of the house when we are gone. This whole belly band thing is new to me but it is easy enough. |

| Hi Misty! Before coming on YT, I had never heard of belly-bands let alone seen one - do they exist in the UK (sorry, but I've never looked...)? I wonder if you've tried 'stopping him mid-mark' (that sounds like a stupid question!!!). Harry's only ever tried it 3 times - once when Andy hung his coat in the 'wrong' place , once when we went to my parents house and he fancied the corner of their washing machine , and again, at theirs, when I think he got the whiff of their (deceased) female Boxer on my dad's favourite chair.... A short, sharp, quite loud "Aaaaagh, NO" and I must admit he's never done it since - anywhere. I felt a bit cruel at the time - but, for us, it worked...

HELLO Yes, I caught him in the act a few times a couple of months back and thought I was fortunate to do so since it was an opportunity to correct. I thought it was all over and done with until I noticed marking in the regular spot about 2 weeks ago PLUS a new spot where the cat hangs out and it wasn't a few drops there. It was like a yellow river and I only found it because he did it in front of me AGAIN when he stressed about the mailman putting some mail through the door. I'm convinced his behavior is stress related i.e. a coping mechanism so I will continue the banding and see how it goes for the next 8 weeks. I can't think what else to do!

| I adopted a 2 year old male yorkie recently that was not neutered. He marked like a water faucet! We put him in a belly band and immediately made arrangements to have him neutered. Afterwards, we did use the belly band as a training tool. He couldn't wear it right after the surgery so I kept him crated or tethered to me. Once his surgery healed, we kept him in the belly band and also kept all eyes on him every minute he wasn't in the crate. At first he would mark/pee right through the band but gradually we noticed the band stayed drier longer and longer. Its been 6-7 weeks now and we are all but done with the band. I still don't trust him when I have to leave him alone for a bit, but generally the band is still dry when I come back. I absolutely DO NOT trust him when I take him anywhere else, as he will still try to mark. I don't know that will ever change. Diana |

Thanks for sharing your experience!!!! Like you, I'm doubtful the behavior will change but still hopeful anyway - I'm an optimist so what can ya do... Teddy doesn't mark with the band and he must do it so quickly without it because the spot he marks is RIGHT in front of my face and I've only caught him twice. The evidence, however, suggests that he's marked far more than just twice. It's just tiny drops which are on the door surrounds and never makes it to the carpet like a stream would, for example. The only substantial amount was found on the bannister upstairs where the cat was and only once after the mailman. Otherwise, just tiny drops that one would HARDLY notice unless he was caught doing it - which he was!! I don't know about neutering. I know that it doesn't guarantee it will stop the marking. If it wasn't for Teddy's size and breeder advice and vet opinion, I would have had him fixed a long time ago. It's hard to just disregard all of the advice and I'm annoyed I took it all, too! CONFLICT!!

| Misty for our little guy it was just a few little drops at a time too, but often enough that they added up. He was an outside dog before we adopted him, so I think some of it was stress for him too. New home, and he had to adapt to a whole new way of life and had NO INSIDE MANNERS! He would go outside to actually pee, but was constantly trying to mark his territory in the house. We also have another older male dog too, so they were working out their pack order. We've had him since mid-November and things have definitely improved. Lots of patience. Good luck! Diana |
