YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Here are some more ideas (in fact I had another thread here somewhere on all the places you can take your doggies for initial and on-going socialization. 1. A front porch your dog on lead, and you sit out together and watch the world go by. Eventually you have a cuppa and read your book and or newspaper. Initially for some month(s) you need to be alert and watchfull and take the opportunity to correct un-wanted behaviour - but first you try to set your dog up for success. For eg: you see a walker coming towards you with a dog in tow - now is the time to practice sit/beg for a yummy treat, and over reward - continue practicing the command until the walker goes by. Hopefully your dog ignores the walkers - no barking - no lunging etc. If your dog is ignoring the walkers - you say Oh Good IGNORE good IGNORE. If your dog does not ignore - then correct with your voice the unwanted behaviour. I really really like the leads I have that I can leash up one end around a tree trunk or the railing and the other end of the leash has a slotted space for me to slip one hand through. I will try to find my other posting on this.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Awh found my other thread! I thought I'd start this thread and every-one can add on to where and how they socialize their dogs. Now this is for the average dog, not a dog with temperament issues. In no particular order: 1. Outdoor Farmers Markets: Such a great place to do this. Although be warned that if you have a cute pup it might take you 20 minutes to go down one aisle Dara did so well today, there were lots of young kids, she even had a baby put on her back with Daddy holding the 1yr old. Hubby came with me and every time I looked back he was surrounded by folks petting Dara. Oh and btw Dara is a large puppy at 9 mths and about 70lbs 2. Pet Stores - go to both small and large stores. Different times of the day/evening 3. Volunteer charity events - Like walk for a cure the ones that allow you to bring your dog along. 4. Busy parks and quiet parks. 5. Outdoor dog shows - Often will allow you in with your dog that is under control. 6. Sporting arenas especially ones that are located in parks. The noise of the crowd cheering, smell of hot dogs, etc. Often these parks will have baseball games on or soccer etc. 7. Driving ranges that are outdoors. Watch the golfers and see who comes up to say Hi! 8. Parks conservation areas with lakes or beaches. On a sunny warm day, tons of people 9. Outside flea markets 10. Outdoor ski hill. In wintertime lots of folks around. 11. Downtown in your city on a busy day. Walk the city streets. 12. Outdoor patios (if they allow you to bring your dog in) 13. Doggy daycare places 14. Of course your friends houses apartments 15. Take your dog for a bus ride or a subway ride. 16. Take a ferry anywhere on vacation what have you 17. Go into a vets office just to say hi 18. My bank lets me come in with my dog. Just remember pick up your poop. Also it is a good idea to have some paper towels in case of loose stools Water as needed Extra collar/leash if you are out and about Add your own suggestions

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | While I think of it, I made one consistent mistake with my dogs. *gulp* yup me. Hindsight is just so great isn't it? My dogs don't want to laze around on the dock or a porch, or sit under a tree with me in the summertime enjoying the breeze. Why? Quite simple really, when we go outside, we go outside to do! Walk, swim, climb a hill, hike, do obedience training, rally or agility, always a purpose a something to do. I want to do better this spring summer with my crew. I tell you it is almost painfull when I take all three to the water, I crate rotate for water events, but nobody is happy even on lead when we sit to have our lunch. They are on tenderhooks for Moms to say okay, walk about, or water time etc. I want to teach my dogs to just enjoy the great outdoors with me, not needing to do anything but just relax and laze around a bit. The closest they have come is the last two summers at our cottage rental, and that was only at night when we were all out on the deck, having had a meal, then a walk, then we came back to sit outside some more. But as soon as I got up all three were up on their feet - looking to me - as if to say okay Moms where to now? Hubby how-ever could get up and walk about in and out, and the dogs stayed down....

| Just for fun, thought I'd mention that Half Price Books is pet friendly (at least here it is, call around to find pet friendly stores) and I feel it may be a bit less risky than a pet shop for a very young pup. Either way, I love it - surrounded by books and dogs - it doesn't get any better than that. |

| That was a good read. I'm pleasantly surprised to see that it's all stuff I have just always done with my dogs. Currently, with many family members and friends with dogs and children, and having 4 children myself, it's not hard to provide my puppies with new experiences. We bring our dogs with us when we can. It's just good for them. Thanks for the article!
