| Feeding and Diarrhea Hi, Finally my Angel stopped the diarrhea and now is going "soft formed" stools. What did I do different? I was giving her chicken with rice and even added probiotics, but it was not until I added a little sweet potato did the diarrhea stop. Now she is going soft but it is formed. She is still eating plain baked chicken with plain white rice and a bit of sweet potato. I am afraid to go back to the kibble she was on. The kibble she was on was Wellness toy dog chicken formula...however she use to scratch so often it became worrisome. Since she has been on chicken , rice, sweet potato... much less scratching is going on. With the kibble I thought maybe she was allergic to chicken, but since she has been on regular chicken for a few weeks, there is much less scratching. I would appreciate recommendations, especially from the show breeders, as to what kibble works best and what homemade recipes work best. The diarrhea and the bloody diarrhea lasted for a while and I do not want to go back there. Thanks in advance for you help and your concern!! My Angel is only 5 lbs. |

| I agree with Taylor, if you want to continue a homecooked diet, I would look into the BalanceIt supplement and recipes as soon as possible. Happy to hear Angel is improving, but the diet you are feeding does not cover all the nutrients needed in a dog diet, which could lead to other problems. Has she been to the vet? Weeks of soft stools (and the previous diarrhea/blood) is very concerning especially in a 5 pound dog.

| I use petdiets.com for my recipes. They can give you a recipe that specifies the exact amount needed each day as well as recommended supplements. Dr. Remillard is very helpful when you have questions.

| Thanks for your help and suggestions Yes I did take her to the vet and I gave her Metronidazola for 7 days and then Famotidine pills for 7 days and the diarrhea only stopped when I gave her the sweet potato in her diet....They tested her stool and tested her blood and did not give me any specific diagnosis... They said it most likely was not an obstruction. I just threw it out the sweet potato after having it in refridge for about a week and will now try adding some pumpkin. I get nervous about feeding food I make. Although I cook it good and refridgerate it I do not how long to keep it. What type of dry dog food do you use? Do you use the Natural Balances Small Breed formula? Which one do you use? Is Balance.it a supplement? thanks again! |

I use Science Diet ID because my girl has tummy issues. I also have a home cook diet using rice and chicken and another with chicken and sweet potatoes. I did use the supplement balance it but now I am using chefs canine complete. It will depend on what your recipe recommends.

| Winnie had a lot of tummy troubles the first few months after we brought her home. We finally found a kibble that works well for her...natures variety prairie puppy. It's very affordable and has freeze dried raw coating the food. We tried wellness also and she had horrible breath. She has absolutely no issues with the natures variety. |

| thanks so much for the feedback I took my Angel off of sweet potato and chicken and just gave her chicken with rice. She had another bout of diarrhea. I called the Vet who told me to give her two days of the peptic pill and reintroduce the sweet potato since it worked for me the first time. She told me to continue with the probiotics. My Angel is a very nervous delicate little thing. She is five pounds but the vet says she is delicate. Since I introduced the sweet potato her stool firmed up but is still soft. There definitely is a difference in what is going on. She never had bowel problems before and always had decent stools. I know of a number of things I did different since she got sick: 1. one of them was using tooth gel with alcohol. I wonder if that harmed her. Petzlife was the brand; 2. I gave her eggs; 3. opened a new bag of her treats and gave her one; 4. I stopped giving her the heart worm pill/treatment in December since it is very cold in the northeast in the winter. She does not have heartworm... she was tested. I am very upset/ been going through this for while now on top of having a very sick family member. |

I'm wondering if she would do best if you stopped the rice totally, and just did the potato and chicken.

| RE: Heart worm pill & treats Hi, thanks for your comments and suggestions. I was giving her Nylabone Dentalhearts for treats and wellness treats. It is very cold, drafty in my home although I have heat on 70 degrees. My vet told me not to restart the heartworm meds until the diarrhea resolves. Does anyone know what side effects the heart worm pill has and which one is the best? I used the one with the yorkie on the package. I am now feeding her plain chick. breast, a little rice, a little sweet cooked potato and a little raw shredded carrot mixed with probiotics. I got two good stools. thanks again. |
