| How long did you crate your yorkie? Was curious how long y'all crated your dogs until you let them have the house for the whole day while you're at work or wherever. |

Lexi is a year old and still does not have full run of the house, but I do have a rather large area with her crate in there for her to run around in while I'm not home. I'm not sure when or if she will ever have full run of the house. Too much for her to get into or get hurt. She has more than enough room, especially since all she really does is sleep (in her crate) when we are gone anyway. | |

| Gosh I feel like we kept Toki in a crate while we were out until she was at least 8-10 months (?) or so. After that, we still kept her confined to a small area (like the kitchen/dining room in our apartment). Even at over three years old now, we still keep her in an x-pen with a cover while going out. Gives her plenty of room to sunbathe, play with her toys, have a water dish, and a cozy little bed. She loves it and knows to hop right in her pen as we are leaving when we tap on the top of it! Teddy has pretty much had free run of our place after living with us for a couple weeks (he was around 10 months old at the time) and we were sure he was reliable in terms of potty training. He's very mild and non-destructive (unlike Toki the troublemaker). The worst thing Teddy will do is knock over folded laundry to make a nest to nap in! I can deal with that lol! I guess it just depends on how reliable with potty training and not destructively chewing your pup is without your supervision. |

| Yeah, mine's a year old. I've caught him chewing the wood around the bedroom door (I just ran out to Target real quick and he did that, and that was after a 6 mile walk). That was a few months ago, but I don't trust him yet. He stays in a crate that's for dogs 71-90 pounds, so it's big. I was just curious for how long he'll have to stay crated. I'm away from home for 11 hours for work (I come home at lunch and let him out real quick). Last edited by Tinathetooth; 01-27-2015 at 05:05 PM. |

| Our male Jake marks so he is crated during the day and has been for 6 years. Our 2 girls stay in the bedroom. We put up a baby gate and they stay there during the day. BTW ...Jake still marks even though he has been neutered, so he wears a diaper when he's out. |

| ZoE was in a playpen during the day until about 16 weeks old, then she got the run of the house. She was potty trained by about 12 weeks, but it took me a bit longer to trust her enough to let her have free reign. She slept in my bed since six 1/2 weeks old and never had an accident there. She potty trained very easily. I'm a firm believer in having one designated potty spot, that is used consistently. And I praise and treat every time she goes there. Zoe is now four years old and still demands a treat every time I'm home and she potties on her pads. I have no issue treating for life for good potty habits, if it keeps my home clean!

| It's interesting to see the different ways people take care of their dogs. Izzie is 8 months and still crated at night. We have an ex pen if we leave during the day. But most of the time she is with me. |

| I love dog training and Jackson is pretty well trained, but the one thing I always fail at is crate training lol. He was hardly in a crate. I think it lasted a few weeks tops. I got him at 9 weeks old. We graduated to an expen for a short bit, then I ended up just leaving him in my bedroom with a baby gate. By 6 months, he had full reign of the house and was trustworthy. New pup Lola is 4 months or so and she is the same way - just horrible in a crate. Cries/whines/barks, escape artist - climbs out of every pen, chews through mesh ones, etc, in the metal crate she will poop/pee in there. So we've given up already. She's just loose in the back room now where we have tile. While we're not home, the dogs behave together and just sleep, no messes, etc. Come to think of it we never crated any of our dogs growing up or my dads current dogs. I guess we've just been lucky. Most of the dogs I walk/dogsit are crated.

| My puppy will be 5 months old next Monday and she is confined in a play pen when Im not home but she can get out of it if she wants too lol. She is very adventurous and doesn't like to be confined. She has to be watched closely because she looks for anything on the floor that she can eat and with 5 kids on the floor she always finds something. Her playpen is in our living room so when I leave I close all the bedroom doors so if she decides to get out she is just on the tile and that's usually pretty clean lol. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I didn't crate as all of mine despise the crate, I used an Iris pen -- I'd keep them in there whenever I was away from home, up until they were better trained and more sturdy as puppies.
