| Need diet suggestions for kidney disease and pancreatitis. My 11-year-old Yorkie was attacked in our own yard about 1.5 years ago. All her ribs were broken and she was lucky to survive. A few months after the attack, she was diagnosed with renal failure which could have been from going into shock and the strong medications she was taking for several months. I put her on Royal Canin LP diet for a few months. She did fine at first, but then stopped eating. I was told she was dying. I saw a holistic vet who felt her main problem was pancreatitis based on her lab results. With acupuncture and a change in diet (Primal) she started eating and gained some weight. She suddenly went downhill 2 weeks ago and stopped eating, possibly from gum disease or abscess tooth. She has bounced back after receiving IV fluids and antibiotics. I have an appointment with a vet dentist in 2 weeks to see how to deal with her mouth issues. In the meantime, I don't know what to feed her as low protein diets often have too much fat which aggravates pancreatitis and needs to gain weight (dropped from 7.5 to 5.5 lbs). |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and welcome to YT ! Are you looking for another dog food, or are you willing to home cook for her? If you can home cook, I'd contact www.balanceit.com and have their experts make a custom recipe for you and your baby. I'm so very sorry to hear all that your little one has been through, my gosh, how scary. I really hope she feels better soon, and that she gains some weight quickly.

| Zagdog, I know exactly what you're going through. The renal diets are very high in fat which often leads to pancreatitis, especially in small dogs. Feeding Hills K/D caused my kidney compromised yorkie to develop chronic pancreatitis. If your yorkie's kidney numbers aren't too high, you might be able to feed Royal Canin GI lowfat (its an RX diet) to get over the hump until you can get advice from your vet. I could not find a commercial diet that worked for my little guy and ended up home cooking for him for a couple of years. DogAware.com Health: Kidney Disease in Dogs The kidney section of dogaware has some good comparisons on various commercial foods and also some recipes for home cooked food. There is a lot of info to wade through but you might find something that would work for your dog for now while you're waiting to get him into the specialist. Sending good thoughts for your baby. | My Sophie Kate (the picture in my profile) has suffered from Pancreatitis since she was a little over 1 years old, she is now 6.5 and is doing extremely well. My suggestion to you is get her teeth looked and resolved and then put her on a very strict diet of low fat food, Sophie Kate eats nothing but Hills ID (a prescription food) and as far as treats she eats low fat dog pretzels from Petco. She gets nothing else, no matter how much she begs and spins around like a ballerina. I will tell you it took a couple of months and some additional Vet stays until we figured out exactly what she could tolerate (nothing). It also took a lot of visits to the Vet and blood work to check her levels. Your dog can gain weight on the special foods, in fact that is one of the issues I have with Sophie Kate, keeping her weight at around 8 lbs. I would have to wonder if maybe she is losing weight because of her bad tooth, lets hope the removal of that will help. Good Luck, keep us posted and do not lose faith it took me awhile to get it under control but I am confident you will also.

| My Zoey has had three bouts of pancreatitis in three years. She is on Royal Canin Gastro Low Fat canned and kibble. I tried Balanceit home cooked chicken and rice diet but she tired of that too. As for treats the vet said No treats even though I have FAT FREE treats. She can have a few Cherrios as a treat. That's it nothing else. I am story that your little ones suffers from renal & pancreatitis. I would stay away from the Petco low fat treats.

| I wouldn't worry too much about not gaining weight. With low fat diet Zoey is always hungry so I have to feed her three times per day. She has gained almost two lbs on low fat diet!

| My Presley who was 17 1/2 before I lost him suffered from pancreatitis for 10 years on and off. We had him on Iams low fat diet. The last year of his life he had renal disease that was treated 3 times a week with fluids. Presley would not eat the Hills diet food so we had to special order the Purina prescription diet he liked. He did really well on it. Towards the end, we did have to coax him to eat more by putting in green beans or peas. Good luck...

YT 2000 Club Member | diet I have had Spud on the Hills zd diet. He eats it and seems to be doing well. We go for a blood test today. Pancreatitis is very serious, I almost lost Spud with this problem. He is so much better but has to stay on the low fat diet. |

| Pancreatitis is very serious and very scary, Sophie Kate only had one major occurrence since her first a 1 years old, I learned my lesson really early. I cringe now when I see people who feed their dogs human foods high in fat, I have no proof but Sophie Kate's first round occurred shortly after she stole a piece of Turkey bacon from a 3 year old. I have no experience with Renal Failure other than my neighbors dog had it for a long time and I used to help her with giving him fluids a couple times a week.
