| Newbie advice Hello everyone, I am new to YorkieTalk, and soon to be a new mama to our first Yorkie named Bentley. We will be getting him the first weekend in February and are so excited. Since I am a newbie, what would you say is one of the most important pieces of advice? I'm so excited to learn, thanks for your help & advice!! 💗 |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Looks like Bentley will be a cutie! Congrats on the new pup. 😃 As for advice. I have had dogs for years but only just got a Yorkie recently. I would say to become familiar with the breed and if you haven't had dogs before, I would definitely do some reading. I know you'll love your new baby! |

| Yes, I have grown up with many different breeds my whole life. Mostly mixed breeds aka mutts, but have loved them all the same!! I have always wanted a Yorkie, but was never able until now. It just seems the more I read, the more I learn and realize there is a lot to these sweet little bundles. So I thought asking some veterans what their best price of advice is, would prove to be helpful. |

| Exciting! Do you have an xpen? A brush - we like the wooden pin brushes. Start fooling with them young so they get used to it. Are you doing indoor potty? Will need pads if indoors Good book-- HOW TO HOUSEBREAK YOUR DOG IN 7 DAYS by Shirlee Kalstone, but remember if they are young you are laying the ground work because they are not developed enough if real young. I'm sure others will come forth.

| I have not experienced problems with hypoglycemia but my daughter's yorkie did and I am convinced that her blood sugar dropped due to irregular feeding. Since then, I have been a stickler to make sure my babies had access to food at all times. I would keep some nutrical or Karo syrup constantly at hand in case of an issue. |

| How exciting!!! Bet you can't wait! What saved our lives, when Harry was a teeny, bite-y, piddly little boy - was either his (huge!) crate or exercise pen - to keep him safely contained if need be.... Good luck and congratulations! Sally + Harry xx

| Thanks everyone, we are very excited!!! No we do not have an ex pen yet, I'm planning on ordering one tomorrow. We do have a crate, and are planning on crate training him, and potting outside. But I'm a little worried with the snow outside he may not want to go out, so I'm prepared to puppy pad train, until it warms up and the snow melts if need be. I've heard about the Nutacal before, where do I get it from and does it have instructions on how much to give or how to know it is needed? Probably something I should read a little more about. |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk! One of my pet peeves is when I see someone walking a Yorkie with a collar. Please use a harness! These little ones can get collapsing trachea. No one told me how important this is. Some things you don't want to live and learn. You sound like you're doing your research, I commend you!

| It's great to see you are doing your research. I was reading your post about potty training on pads in the winter. We had a lot of success doing that. When I first brought Calleigh home, the weather was warm so she learned to go potty outdoors. We lived in MA then and she didn't want to have anything to do with rain or snow. She learned to use the potty pads pretty quickly. She is seven now, and I still leave a pad down just in case I'm out longer than I expected to be. She uses the pad and I don't have to worry about her trying to hold it in for a long time. These little ones are so smart. In another post patience was mentioned. You will need a lot of that. I remember thinking Calleigh was just like a toddler, always into everything. I wasn't working at the time so I didn't get a an xpen. She sure kept me very busy all day.

YT Addict | I think a good idea to leash train is do it inside the house first. Also get nutalcal for sugar lows. Read the list of previous post in library and becoming a new parent it covers a lot. I use a belly beld on me boo (male). Check in here when in doubt lots of good people who will help. |
