| Recommendations on Pet Insurance I need some members to give me some ideas on Pet Insurance. I just got a AARP email this morning for Petplan. I need to know if anyone if familiar, and how it compares, as in what you get for the price. If not may someone knows another plan that is better?

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | There are a lot of threads on here about pet insurance, and there is an article in the library about some things to look for when evaluating pet insurance. My experience has been, the insurers are pretty open about what they cover or not, their websites are usually very informative and easy to read. I have Trupanion Insurance which I am satisfied with, although I have yet to make a claim on.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Do you mean a private clinic is offering pet health insurance? It is a new idea to me, and I wonder how they could afford to offer insurance?

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | There are several vets within the same "group" that work together. I have "puppy" insurance which was $100 to start and $50 per month. It covers shots, spaying/neutering and 100% on unlimited office visits, 30% off tests and meds and 50% off emergency care, hospitalization and surgeries. I hope I will never need it but it helps make it more affordable. Also, of you are on the plan you are eligible for financing if costs escalate above $300. |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Well is that insurance plan portable? Meaning if you go outside that clinic you would get coverage? I think for the first year or so let us see $100 to enroll. $50 per month = $800 in the first year relatively a break even if you are going to neuter/spay your dog. (at the very top end). Do they cover genetic or heritable diseases? Will they cover the cost of a specialist visit, and surgery by a specialist that is not employed by that clinic? Just some food for thought here.

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | There are not any restrictions as far as hereditary diseases. In fact, they do blood tests at 9 months to check liver function in Yorkies due to the possible liver shunt. I realize the cost, however I had this plan for a male kitten that was healthy when I got him. Within his first year he had cat acne, a twisted intestine, and an eye issue. I was able to take him for as many visits as necessary at no additional cost and saved on the surgery and meds. Just knowing I can go anytime and have great care is worth the cost. As for out of area, you have to submit the receipts but I have not had to do this. |
