| Non stop eating! So my 14yr old yorkie who never ate her food right away and was always picky, has been screaming to eat all day! I have been having to feed her small amounts up to 5 times a day now! I'm sure she's gained a pound in the past month. She has been diagnosed with kidney disease and high BP and thyroid issues. The vet said she may have Cushings disease. She has also been drinking a huge amount of water and pee peeing everywhere but it's prob. from the kidney issues. Was wondering if anyone has had a yorkie with cushings disease or this excessive hunger issue? |

| I haven't had experience with any of the things you've mentioned but I'm sure someone will come along shortly with experience and advice. Hang in there x |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | This could be Cushings, which my Wylie has. A few of the cardinal signs are excessive hunger, excess drinking and peeing, fur loss, lethargy, weight gain, hind leg muscle wasting, heat intolerance. Also, her thyroid could very much contribute to this. Are you going to test for Cushings then?

| I have had a dog with kidney issues, but not Cushings. At the time, we "hoped" Cushings could explain away some of the symptoms and did a lot of research and had our dog tested. The test for Cushings is non-invasive. The vet will draw blood, then inject your dog with a tiny dose of steroid, wait several hours and draw blood again, and then again several hours after that. We lived close enough to be able to take our dog back and forth for the blood draws so he did not have to spend the day at the vet's office. Cushings is not curable but it is very treatable, and treatment could alleviate some or all of your dog's symptoms, and treatment could also help the kidneys. Diana |

| Bellarena- I've owned a small breed dog (not a Yorkie) that had Cushings. Another visible symptom is a bloated belly and swayed back. There is treatment however, and a Cushings dog can lead a happy life, but proper vet care and medication is essential to their health and comfort. It can be expensive but in our case, pet insurance covered a good bit. Wishing you all the best--- the excessive peeing is a challenge but they can't help it. |

| My past girl was diagnosed with Cushings appox age 10 y/o, she was treated with meds. "Lysodren" she showed no signs of excessive hunger, excess drinking and peeing, lethargy, weight gain, hind leg muscle wasting. 4 years into the disease she did have patches of hair loss. She was treated for this with meds. Hair did grow back. She led a active, healthy life for 7 years with Cushings. Last Oct. 2013 she had to be put down at age 17 y/o, not related to Cushings. A Cushings dog can lead a normal, active, healthy, productive life with the right care, meds. and ATCH stem blood testing.

| Thanks so much for all of your input. Just got back from the vet and she told me that she thinks the kidneys are getting worse. She rechecked her urine and found more protein so she sent it out to the lab to do more testing. Had to increase her blood pressure meds-2 different kinds as her BP is quite high. I get home and the vet calls to tell me her thyroid was way too high and this could be why shes so hungry. Now to stop the thyroid meds. I asked about Cushings again and she said the bloodwork did not show it was even near the range. So I'm hoping it was the thyroid med. if not looks like it may be kidney disease worsening. It's so stressful! Thanks again everyone! |
