| A few questions about coat and growth HI again, I have a few questions with photos. My first question is at what age can you start getting and idea of what color your Yorkie will be as an adult? Also at what age do the colors stop changing? Trinket is 6 1/2 months old today and here are a few photos after her bath today. What color does she appear she is going to be and can you tell at this age if it will be a silky or cottony coat? She still appears to be really soft after bath but after a day or 2 she will look a bit more silky... Also she has been the same weight for over a month and a 1/2 now. She has followed the chart to a T. I was wondering if you think she will get much taller and longer at 6 1/2 months or will she just fill out from here? Thanks :-) |

| Hair color changes up until 2 years old. Chloe started out black with a little blonde then her head started getting a little silver. Now, at 13 months, her face has lightened up a lot compared to when she was a baby. Her face is mostly blonde now. Her back has recently started getting some silver strands, which I believe is also standard to become "blue" which in yorkie terms just means a diluted type of black. Trinket to me looks like she'll have the standard yorkie coloring, too. She also looks like she has a silk coat to me. Chloe was about 1.5 lbs at 8 weeks and she did get a little longer and taller but not too much. I used the growth chart, also and it was pretty accurate for me. She is about 3 pounds now full grown. Her length and height stayed about the same since around 8 months old. This is just my take on your questions.

| Hair color can change to a degree throughout the Yorkie's lifetime, but the biggest changes to adult colors depends on the dog's genetics. My boys were 3 years old before they achieved the colors they are today. Mainly their heads changed from age 2 to 3, becoming the almost pure gold blond. Teddy's saddle is growing lighter all the time. Growth also depends on genetics. My boys are brothers and had late growth spurts at 11 months in height and length.

| Thank you. Trinket is 2.4 lbs now, she has been that weight since 5 months with seemingly no change in height and length in awhile. She was 15 oz at 8 weeks old. Top of her head has been silver for awhile with black tips. Her back is getting lighter underneath looks a bit silver also? |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | In the third pic her hair almost looks like it is still puppyish. If I would be pressed to guess, I'd guess a modified silk coat.

| Should a 6 1/2 month olds coat still look/be puppyish? Also what is a modified silk coat? Would that be a bit of both the cotton and silky and what type of care am I looking at with that type of coat? |

Max had dark stripes on his head called 'thumbprints,' which includes a stripe up the center of the topknot and one on each side of the head. He didn't lose those until he was 3. That is when he went pure blond on top. Teddy had a white blond head as a pup. He turned gold at age 3. It is fun watching them change. I should do a timeline of photos.

Yes, modified is a combo of silk and cotton. Care required depends. Might be a breeze, or might tangle more. There is an advantage to a little cotton in the coat: it makes for great shorter hairstyles and tends to stay in place better than a silk coat.

| I believe you are correct because it almost looks like my Remy's coat and I would say he is a modified coat. Also I believe i had read on another thread about the gold flash color in their eyes can mean a modified coat. I actually like the modified coat. My daughters yorkie has the cotton coat and my sisters yorkie has the silk coat and Remy is in between. His coat is very manageable. Remy's hair is long but what I noticed is that it is not as shiny as a silky coat.

| I posted pictures of Lola's coat here, she's 1 year and 9 months old and her hair is nearly floor length. You can see the roots are grey and the ends are almost black, the transition between the colors is smooth. Her hair grows fast, she almost had a floor length coat at 8 months. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...nter-hair.html Your puppy has a lot of color changing to do. What color were her parents? Lola also went from 5lbs at 6 months to 7lbs at 1 year. |

| Her parents were shaved so I couldn't tell much about coats. The dad t Appeared to be the typical blue and gold and the mom seemed much lighter on her back. The moms dad seemed to be the typical blue and gold also |

| Our Kyra has a modified coat. It does require much more brushing than Laddys silk coat but I love the look of it.

| All yorkies are different. Just like people. Your pics looks like your pup still has that fluffy puppy coat but just the color is changing. The cotton coat looks more "teddy bear" but the silk coat is easier to take care of and grown out long. Quote:
