| Anxiety or something else? Let me preface this by saying with the holidays and all things have been crazy around here! We've gone out of town every weekend (one day a weekend) and when we are at home there has been a lot of running around so our schedules have been completely turned upside down. Cali has been fine, but she's been doing this weird thing and I'm wondering if it's anxiety related? The first time she did it was a couple of weeks ago. All of a sudden she started frantically sniffing and pacing in the same area. It was like she was looking for something but there was nothing there. I did have a candle burning, which is a normal around here, but I figured maybe she was just smelling it more than usual that day. However, now the behavior has picked up more. She'll loudly sniff with her nose in the air while whining and being extremely restless. She'll lay down, get back up, sniff and whine, lay down, up, pace, sniff and whine, etc. She has mostly done it when we've gotten home from running errands. However, she is doing it now, and the reason why I'm wondering if it's anxiety is that my husband is not here today when usually he is. She is always a little off when one of us is missing, so I figured that was what had her upset this morning. I guess I'm just wondering if anyone here thinks I'm on the right track or if it sounds like something else? After this weekend life should calm down considerably so I am hoping she will start to feel better if that's what the issue is.

| I wonder if she isn't just smelling the different scents that follow you in on your clothes especially since you've been shopping so much or to so many functions over a few days. A lot for her to take in at once. If you bring in bags and set them on the table, maybe she is taking in the smell of the bags. On another note, if you cannot pinpoint what exactly she is smelling to confuse her (like a spill of something on the floor/carpet) don't ignore this behavior either. Dogs senses are so much more sensitive than ours. Do you live in an apartment or house? I don't want to frighten you, but you may also want to do a security check of the perimeter of your home. She could be smelling something coming from outside. Could be animal, or human unfamiliar to her. I live by my dogs senses. If they are calm, I am calm, if they are nervous with their nose in the air, I am nervous and check things out.

| When you do check, put her on a leash and take her with you. If, just in case, there was someone outside, she will take you right to the spot that they were. We had a peeping tom when my girls were younger and my dogs knew exactly what window he was looking in. (hence my paranoia to the behavior ) We also had a cat living under our deck once, and that too drove our girls quite crazy for a while.

| It sounds more like she is scenting something. She could be scenting the smell of mice inside or out, termites in the walls/attic, or anything different in the house that has her unsettled due to it being a very different type of scent than she is familiar with. Do you have any special Christmas scented potpourri, scented pet toys, oils or spices, gift foods or something to be wrapped or already wrapped that she is picking up on? Sometimes just a leak of food from a can or a container of food that has popped open in the cupboard can drive a dog nuts. Or sometimes leaks in appliances or pipes are picked up by dogs. I'd try leading her around the house, close to the cupboard, fridge, dishwasher, water heater, furnace, storage areas/units, along all the walls, inside and out, to see if she "hits" on anything.

| From what I have experienced with Teddy, it doesn't sound like anxiety. According to the vet, Teddy is 'fearful' and although Teddy does pace, whine and is very restless (especially on Monday's) this is usually accompanied by sweat down both sides of the muzzle and the pacing is all over the house and back to the front door where he knows people come and go.. |
