| Scratching My Yorkie Poo Ace is scratching a lot. I put frontline on him don't see any fleas. My friend said her vet said to give her dog yogurt that it would help. Ace won't eat it. Have you got any ideas? |

| Usually dogs love yogurt. I only give plain greek yogurt. Full fat or fat free is fine. However, one of mine scratches a lot. She just has really sensitive skin plus thin fragile hair. It could be food allergies, or environmental allergies, in which case if she's allergic to dirt, grass, pollen, etc she just has to live with it unfortunately. I was advised to give 1/4 tab of Zyrtec daily. Didn't do a lick of help. I found putting coconut oil on topically on her "hot spots" helped more but she looks like a greasy mess. Oh well. Some of us just have itchy babies. I myself have dry skin and flaky scalp no matter what I do.

| It could be allergies I would have the vet check it out.

| This probably won't help you - but we used frontline too and same results - lots of itching (no fleas in sight). I'll try yogurt. Our pups will eat anything.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Yogurt isn't known to help with scratching - it's main use is as a probiotic that keeps the small intestine populated w/ flora. Is she chewing or licking her paws? If yes, that's the cardinal sign of allergies...

| Though the problem with going to the vet about scratching is that the cause can be a million different things. Lots of testing, money, and time. Then come to find out your dog could be allergic to grass. My vet suggested not to do all the testing unless the dog is an extreme case; scratching raw, hair falling out, etc.

| I would try changing her diet to a grain free food and add fish oil to her diet. Not sure if you use heat where you are, but that causes dry skin too. Costs lots of money to test for allergies and it doesn't usually help. A diet change and adding fish oil or organic coconut oil usually solves it.

| You do not have to start with getting expensive tests. They might want to test for yeast but that's not normally pricey. They can give you a medicine for environmental allergies. My dog has environmental allergies but I never got expensive testing the vet just put her on hydroxyzine has needed. When hers act up though if she scratches to much she will end up with a skin infection. Itching can be miserable for them so I would wait a long time to do something.
