| Nervousness before getting puppy Hey everyone! OK, so my countdown to yorkie is now at less than 2 weeks. But I'm wondering...is it normal that I feel pretty nervous? I mean, I've had a countdown since the mom yorkie was one month pregnant... But as the actual day nears, the amount of nervousness I'm feeling is increasing! Did anyone panic when they first got their first dog, and ultimately get over it? I'm getting him with my boyfriend, so what if a dog strains our relationship? What if I hate having a dog? I think it's all the unknown- I've prepared SO much (my boyfriend makes fun of me), researched the best food, training facility, everything- but I know that ultimately when he gets here I have no idea what it'll be like. Any thoughts on the first few days/weeks with a dog so I can maybe better know what to expect would be so appreciated! Thanks. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I feel like you're a real "thinker" and so am I, so I totallllly understand your mind going where it is right now, trying to think of everything, researching a ton, worrying a bit. It's natural to worry a bit, in fact I think it truly says to me just how much you care and want this to be wonderful and just how much you're trying to prepare for this. I won't lie, puppies are a LOT of work, they really are. Some skin Moms will tell you they're way more work than skin-babies, lol! But try not to worry bc in all likelihood, you are going to fall head over heels - and any real hassle that comes along will be greeted w/ love and patience and understanding...even if/when there is frustration. Probably the biggest frustration we see here is, of course, potty training - so have a PLAN...know what you're doing so that you have the best chance of success. If you haven't yet, go to our General Training section and read those excellent potty training threads! The first few days/weeks, you just want to make your pup feel loved and safe, and not make any big changes like to food or anything right away. Establish some sort of routine. Have all your needed supplies on hand. Expect LOTS of cute puppy breath and kisses and cute naps and cute playing. Your pup will likely be very "mouthy" - wanting to mouth/bite everything...and this is just a natural and expected learning stage, so be patient with that. Now, if the worst happened and you found out you just are not a dog/puppy person -- just do the right thing ASAP before the pup gets too attached...and return the kiddo to the breeder. Just always do right by the fur kiddo, and you can't go wrong then. Can't wait to hear how it goes...and we must have piccies !

| Just to add...... If it strains your relationship, just get rid of him (I mean the boyfriend not the dog ). To me getting a puppy was like having kids..... You wonder how am I going to take care of the child but we seem to manage and all three of mine have survived my parenting skills or lack there of.

Thank you so much for this...very helpful and encouraging. And YES I have been called an overthinker many times... There should be an Overthinkers Anonymous group. I know I am a dog person, I have been my whole life. I'm just hoping my fears are due to my mind's inability to prepare 1 million percent haha. I'm hoping it will be OK! I will definitely keep you posted. I'm choosing him out on Wednesday! | |

| Here are the crazy thoughts running through my mind. Prior to getting my new yorkie puppy, I have owned four dogs; a collie, a Golden Retriever, a Shetie, and another Yorkie. I bought each of them from breeders without even knowing what a "reputable" breeder was and had a fabulous experience and long loving life with each of them. Part of my family. The first three each died of old age. My last dog (the yorkie) was my favorite and she was taken from me suddenly when she was hit by a car. Through the enormity of my grief, I found yorkietalk, and my love for the yorkie breed was set in stone and has led me down a new path of obsession for all things yorkie. While I love this site and everything I am learning, I have to admit I sometimes long for my days of ignorance when everything was so much simpler, lol. Does that make sense? They say knowledge is power and you cannot unlearn the things you have learned so I am moving forward on my new path. You have said you are a thinker. I suspect you are also a meticulous list maker. Keep doing what feels right to you. I feel that your new puppy is coming into the perfect home. |
