| Avoiding the car, shaking and panting My Yorkie girl used to love the car and now she hangs back and I have to persuade her to come to me when I pick her up and put her in the car. In the car she has a car booster seat so she can look out and is clipped in for safety. She trembles whilst I pick her up and shakes whilst we drive along - panting and looking around. Does anyone have any idea what can have changed and what I can do to get her to enjoy it again? Hope you can help. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | None of my dogs really enjoy the car either...maybe bc they associate it w/ the vet...? Do you think yours does? I'm not sure what you could do to make her enjoy it again...other than continue to try.

Jayspee, here are some more tips that might make car travel more tolerable and even fun: Dog Travel and Car Anxiety - Dog Life and Style Max cried in the car for his entire first year. Now he loves it.

YT Addict | Someone suggested taking the pup to a park and give treats and praise . So they can associiate it with good things. Do you go regular with her. If not that could be why. She has a routeen and that to her is not part of it . Im trying to take boo more often. Hard now cause of being in a neck brace and he wont be still. |

| If that's the case, OP, try using the car also to take her to fun places, like the park or a pet store, etc., Or maybe have a puppy/other dog friend ride with her, that is good in cars and likes the car? Maybe it could put your pup more at ease? Maybe a Monkey-See-Monkey-Do situation?

| Luna just started doing the same thing in the car. She pants like crazy but does not shake as bad, but still shakes a little. But....she loves the car! She jumps in at her own free will. If we go out the front door she runs to the car, stops at the door and barks and bounces till I open it. I just associated the panting and shaking with being excited. She too will stop shaking and panting if she can hang her head out the window. But it's getting way to cold for that now. |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Roxy absolutely loves riding in the car! Loves looking out the windows. However, she shakes & pants a lot. After watching her for the longest time, I decided all the shaking & panting is excitement. She's far too happy to be anything & often far to warm to be cold. Is your girl getting to have fun trips?

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Joey loves the car, I made a point of taking him to lots of fun places when he was young and if we had a vet visit coming, I made sure I took him to a few fun places the week of the appointment. He never learned to associate the car with the vet. He absolutely loves going to see his breeder who also grooms him, I guess it's the playing with the other dogs or something, but he's is so happy to take the ride to her house. It funny, because my rehome Ralphie was pretty scared of the car, he would shake pretty bad when we put him in his carrier, but after a year and lots of car rides with only a couple of vet visits, he stopped shaking. He doesn't love the car like Joey, but he's not afraid of it and just seems to fall asleep in his carrier.

| I'm so fortunate that from the day I brought her home (45 minute) drive, Piper has been happy and peaceful in car, however...I know, I know...she can roam freely from my lap to her side of car. Maybe try a few really short fun (meaning special treat) trips to bring back joy! | I swear Dinky thinks we are lost whenever we take a trip by car. Sometimes he is a little nervous and sometimes he is very nervous. He won't eat in the car on a longer trip, and he hardly sleeps. On a long car trip by the end of the day, he just looks so darn sad and worried. |

| Jayspee, I feel your pain, our male does the same thing in the car. He's very anxious coupled with panting, shaking and a little crying. We tried a product called "Happy Traveler." One time it seemed to help and the other it wasn't as effective. I wish a had a better solution to this predicament. Quote:

| Thanks for your thoughts everyone - I should have said that we make at least two trips everyday and rarely go anywhere that she isn't delighted to be as we drive to parks and to friends' houses and cafes. Yesterday was funny, I was on the phone for the entire 25 minute trip to my folks and she was calm and settled! |
