YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Nature vs Nurture | Dogs Naturally Magazine I have posted the above as it seems relevant to the OP original thread. I have not read everything yet in these postings, but I do have some things to say on this topic. I find the above article postulates a rather risky and dangerous viewpoint. Anedoctal stories used to foster a point of view, is so far from science based approach it is laughable, most especially as the above author was self-reportedly a medical doctor. Who should be well versed in a rational and understand a science based approach. I am for complimentary and alternative medical approaches where they make sense, and could buttress or support an allopathic medical/surgical regime. And when medical western science quite simply has no answers that have worked for that individual patient. Like it or not Pavro and Distemper need to be inoculated against - using the best window timeframe we can fathom - again based on research that is making these vaccinations and timing, clearer and clearer. Rabies exists unfortunately in North America, but not as far as I am aware to any large extent in domestic dogs n cats. But it is quite alive n well in bats, in raccoons, coyotes, that even in a urban environment we share our space with. Which means there is a real risk of bites, etc to our domestic animals. The law in many States and Provinces is so far behind the best research and practices that AAHA for example puts out, that law-abiding citizens must in some cases inoculate against Rabies when studies have clearly shown there is a minimum effectiveness of an inoculated dog for at least 5 yrs if not 7 years and if not for their lifetime! And for those States and Provinces that allow the citizen to titer their dog instead of inoculate again and again, for this priviledge we pay anywhere from 5 to 7 times the cost of a Rabies Vaccine. Un-fortunately for the pet owner to be educated and pro-active takes some effort, most especially with vets, who maybe so way behind the times, you have to be very clear on your wants and needs for your pet. Do *naturally* reared puppies turn out healthier? I have no idea, there is absolutely no peer reviewed research I can access on this topic.

| Here in Indiana the Flu shot is required for not only Hospital personel but my Husband who is more of a private contractor hes a delivery person who picks up medical records to be data processed also all his other employees that drive for him have to have one. I dont think thats unreasonable either they are trying to keep patients from getting the flu. I get the flu shot and so does my Daughter so we keep the flu out of our household also we are out in the public so we are susceptible to getting the flu. My dogs get the bordatella not so much because Im worried about the flu but Im concerned they could get it and it turn to pnemonia. I would never tell anyone they are harming their dog by not getting it but I personally see the benefits of getting it so I would let them know that and let them decide. If your dog is out in the public like going to dog parks or petsmart etc I see the benefit of it. Also most groomers require it. If your dog is a more stay at home dog well then its probably not necessary but everyone has to decide for themselves whats best. Whew sorry so long but those were my thoughts on the subject

| I just got myself the flu shot. I go back and forth every year lol. Last year, I didn't actually get it, but this year I decided to. I'm kind of in between with the flu shot - I think it can and does help, and it can not as well. But, I figured it couldn't hurt me this year, plus in January I'm hopefully going to be starting an externship at the hospital so figured might as well. I still feel like the human flu vaccine is a lot more effective than dogs bordatella though.

I have no idea how to double quote, but I totally agree with "WannaBe" and then Ann's post. I worked with a nurse years ago that was involved in the research end of flu shots....she told me then....I was in my 20's...."dont ever get that shot...you KNOW how long it normally takes the FDA to approve vaccines and medicines...they throw this stuff together, shake it up and send it out every year!" It was a year or so later that all those people came down with Guillian-Barre' from flu shots.....and that was the icing on MY cake! I went all those years and never got the shot and told everyone in my family not to get it. Now, 36 years later........ I almost died last year from the flu....I seem to get it every year, but it has always been mild, and easily manageable or at least tolerable. Well last year was a killer and it took me from Thanksgiving until March of this year to get over it, with hospitalization and then continued out patient IV antibiotics daily.....I obviously can not do that again, with my son and my babies....so I broke down and took the shot with MUCH reluctance.....I have not had any reaction to it....my arm was achy but I think that was muscle ache from my wrist weight exercises......I can honestly say I would NOT be getting it if it had not been so hard on me last year...and I still do NOT recommend it to anyone that asks me. I think is is dangerous and the risks outweigh the benefits in my mind. I like that protocol where you take 5000 units of D3 and then go up to 10,000 units when people around you start getting the flu! It worked great for me for years....then I stopped taking it that last year when I retired and felt I didnt need it because of limited exposure! Wrong move!!
