| New Mommy wants to take Yorkie Hiking I just adopted my 6 year old Yorkie and I like to quite a bit. I would really like to take her on a 3-4 mile hike with me. I am thinking I will probably end up carrying her some of the time when she becomes tired. Does anyone have experience with taking their little one on hikes? I'm going to bring a water bowl but can you think of anything else I should do for her? Am I setting myself to carry her in my arms the entire hike if she gets tired quickly? She's only 8 lbs so I can do this if I need to. Thanks in advance for your advice! |

| 8lbs isn't THAT tiny. My friends 4lb and 6lb yorkies go on 4 mile walks easily with us. Now, they've been doing this a lot since they were young so they're accustomed to it. And the 4lb one HATES the cold so we don't usually take him when it's cold. You may want to start out with < 2-3 miles and build your way up gradually. However if she seems like she is doing okay, she probably is. Dogs usually let you know when they're tired or had enough. Jackson is my bigger boy, he's nearly 18lbs, but he easily walks 4-8 miles no problem (as long as it's not hot out, he hates heat and humidity). I would just start smaller just to see what her limits might be. Bring water, a few pick-me-up treats for energy. And see how it goes. Dogs love to walk and these guys are terriers after all. It's good exercise for all of us!

| I don't hike but my experience I can share my experiences with longer walks with my two. Magnus (5 y.o. 16 lbs) LOVES to walk and will go for as long as I can last. Zoey (4 y.o. 5.5 lbs) is a different story. She either gets tired or doesn't like the area or who knows but wants to be carried during the walk. I got tired of carrying her in my arms so I bought a backpack to put her in. SO MUCH EASIER and safer. Here's a picture of her in the backpack. She loves it! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/att...y-backpack.jpg |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Oh your baby is going to love you, even the biggest lap dogs in the world love hikes. My Joey was use to walking and when I got another older dog, he wasn't use to long walks, so I got one of those sling type of carriers from of ebay. He gradually built up his stamina and now he can out-walk us all. By the way, she's a cutie!

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Well hiking difficulty of course depends upon the terrain. How steep and or narrow the trails are, and the difficulty of footing. If the terrain is difficult you want to transport your pup in a backpack carrier. So like others said start out with just walking your dog for 30 minutes and see how they do. It is not just their cardiovascular fitness, but also their paws need to toughen up as well. Razzle at 9mths old or so went on a 4-5 hour hike - relatively flat terrain - we stopped for lunch and a swim, and completed the hike. First time I had ever actually seen him tired! But by the time we drove back to the cottage 20-25 minutes later he was raring to go again.

| Dink is a champion little walker and he can do 2 miles pretty easily. When we do carry him, he is usually tucked inside a jacket. That gives him some extra support and takes a little weight off our hands. I agree with the others. See how he does with a mile or two first. Oh, and if yours is anything like Dinky, you will know when he has had enough. he just stops, brakes , and will not budge. |

| If they do well and their paws aren't developing enough calluses, you might try putting on doggie booties to protect their feet. I gotten a water bottle that has a built in water "bowl" tray that you just flip out and it pours water into it, for any travels I might do. But yea, a sling or backpack type carrier would be good to have on hand. Snacks, as they might want to eat. Wouldn't hurt to have a small first aid kit just in case with some nutrical included in it.

Gucci, 5 pounds, 11-13 yo, walks 3 miles 3-5 days a week now. We take about an hour and a half to cover those 3 miles, I stop here and there for him to smell the roses. A year and a half ago, when we first got him, 100 yards was a challenge since he was in such poor condition. Some days, usually hot days, I do carry him part of the way. Most days, there is no need to carry him. One day, I had to jog about half the 3 miles to keep up with him, one day we did six miles. Seems that if I made the time, six mile walks would occur more often. His legs went from these itty bitty tooth pics to Popeye legs! I'm sure if I had him 10 years ago, we would have gone backpacking 10-12 miles a day no problem. | |
