| Schedule is off Hubby and I at odds on our little Benny. Last night he was up 3 times to go out. Bless his heart he doesn't soil my carpet, but sleep is sleep right? His dishes were empty at 8pm and hubby filled both of them up. He doesn't eat when we are gone during the day by his choice. Has always been like that. I told hubby last night he had all ready ate and drank and to leave it or we'll be up all night. I was right and hubby does not/will not get up with him (he's my dog). Here's my question...is it cruel to put up the dishes? Hubby thought so, but I don't. Please tell me if I'm wrong.

Do you free feed then? I feed on a schedule and their last meal is at 5. Even if you are free feeding I would pick up the food bowl way before 8 so he has enough time to eliminate before bed. Also, for the water. Most people will say leave the water out at all times, but I do pick up the water a little before bed. My pups lay down to sleep at 8:30 and I pick up the water at 8. That gives them 30 minutes to empty their bladder. I think of it like my child. I don't let my child drink right before bed for the same reasons. Also, to help with the nighttime wakings, you could wake him up when you go to bed to pee one more time. For example, Lexi will lay down to sleep at 8:30. I will take her out at 8:30 and then when I am ready to go to bed at 10 or so I will wake her up to go again and then put her back to bed. Not sure how old he is, but that should help some with the night wakings, if he's young, he still may need to get up once at night.

| Thanks Kreuer. He's about 2.5. Appreciate your comments! He is free fed but he seems to put himself on his own schedule if that makes sense. He eats right away in the am and again when we get home from work.

Yes, I know what you mean. Lexi was free fed and ate twice a day on her own, but when I recently got a Shih Tzu puppy who was a little piggy and wanted to eat all the time I had to start putting the food down on a schedule. At that age he should definitely be able to sleep through the night. What time does he usually go to sleep and wake up? Lexi is 9 months old and can sleep 10 hours with out having to go potty. Also, is he crated at night or sleep with you?

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | No, it would not be cruel if you had to pull up the dishes just for overnight - that's not a big deal and they can go that long without food/water. Say hi to one of my fave cities for me - Mpls!! Lived there for about 6 years and loved it so much, still miss it.
