| What is a PEE STRING I didn’t want to hi-jack someone else’s thread, so I have started my own. Cody is my first lil boy, I have always had lil girls. Cody is neutered and kept in a short puppy clip. I have to give him a bath every week because he smells so bad of pee, I use a good quality oatmeal shampoo, as per label instructions I leave it on for 10 minutes. Three days later he stinks. Every morning I give him a belly bath to wash off the pee he may have on him from the day before, but this is not helping and I am concerned from all this belly washing and weekly baths he will have dry skin issues. I never had this with my girls, they would get a bath every 2 to 3 weeks, and never smelled as this lil boy does. I just saw a thread about the length of the “pee string”, never having a boy before this “pee string” referral has me wondering now lol. What is a “pee string” I think I know, just want to be sure, and correct this smelly issue. Thanking all in advance for any responses.

| It's a bit of hair left on the penis that directs the urine downward, away from the belly and chest. My boy doggies have them and they are effective on them.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | A pee string is a small amount of hair that is left on the penis area and directs urine flow so that it doesn't go all over the coat. Girls squat, but many boys will lift their legs, especially if they are outside, and the string helps direct the flow. "Pee Strings" work!!

| Thanks gals, That's what I thought when I saw the referral "pee string" Cody kinda squats, like he'll spread his hind legs and will lower his back a little (it's sooo cute lol) no leg lifting. When he pees I can see it's hitting the ground, I just don't know if any is hitting his belly. Because he doesn't lift his leg, and because of the way he stands sometimes I'm not sure if he peed or not, so when he's ready to come in I'll feel his lil wee-wee to see if it's wet, if it is then I know he made, if the hair is dry he stays out until he makes. If he does this kinda lower the back to pee would he still need a pee string and how long should it be, i know he has hair there but I never really looked to see how long that hair is, who knew to look, now I know. I guess the smell of pee is coming from the hair, should I use baby wipes every time he pees to get the pee-pee smell off right away. Are baby wipes safe to use on his lil wee wee area. I would like to stop these belly baths, his behind and back legs always gets wet, it's almost like he gets a full bath without the soap.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Baby wipes are safe to use, a pee string might help, it sounds like it may be splashing up. I don't know how old he is, but he also could be lifting his leg when you aren't around. Joey's breeder is the one who told me about the pee string, he's always had it and he's never had problems with spillage. Has he been neutered? Males who aren't neutered have stronger smelling urine.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Here's a picture of Joey's pee string, it's kind of long in this picture, it doesn't need to be this long, I think an inch is long enough for Joey, he has short legs.

| Thank Joey for this pic, this helps, one inch long and just a few stands of hair is what it looks like. Bad thing is, Cody's hair is not long, he will have to grow more hair on his lil wee-wee. I'll tell this to the groomer, she shaves (I guess) his belly hair don't know how she gets his wee-wee-hair so short, but will tell her to leave a few strands longer. You're the best, including pic, and detailing it, awesome, Thank you.

| I will have to think about this. Dinky seems to have the opposite problem. If the hair is too long there, then he gets smelly. He is a squatter, only lifting the leg rarely. I trim his hair between groomings so that he doesn't have the dried pee on his hair. I wonder if anyone else does it this way. I'm going to ask the groomer if she ever does this. |

| I was thinking about it, and I think a factor might be that Dinky's hair can be sort of curly, so a pee string might not work because of that. ( I suspect some poodle in his lineage, hence the curls) |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Oh that makes sense, a curly string would direct the urine every which way.

| I'm glad I came across this thread! Lately I've noticed that when Teddy pees his coat under his belly is sticky and feels rough. He also squats to pee and sometimes I can't tell if he's laying down or if he's peeing. When his coat gets like that I always have to wash under his belly and I've been using wipes already to wipe his butt because poop gets stuck sometimes in his coat. I'll have to start using it to clean his little peepee area & I will probably look into cutting the pee string down as it's a bit long. |
