| Hello! I'm new to the forums, and I think my puppy's mad at me. First off, I suppose I should introduce myself. I'm Kaileigh, and my mom and I recently adopted a yorkie x maltese puppy (3/4 yorkie) named Luna. She'll be 5 months old on October 11th. I'm wondering, do dogs get mad at their owners? I ask because we took Luna to the groomers last night, and ever since then, she's been really...unusual. For starters, when I went to pick her up from the groomers, she gave me almost no greeting - she just laid down in my arms and didn't look at me. (Normally, she's really excited to greet us, even if we've only left the room for a minute). Since picking her up, she's been much less playful, much less sociable, and much less inclined to listen to us. She's starting to come around, I think, about 24 hours after leaving the groomer, but she's still not back to normal. For the record, the groomer said she behaved really well, for the most part. We knew Luna wouldn't like the groomer, as she's a very timid dog who likes to hide behind us, but...her hair was falling in her eyes! She needed to be groomed! The groomer said Luna bit her a couple times, but then settled down and didn't cause much trouble - she was licking the groomer in a friendly manner partway through the appointment. (As for the biting, it's something we're working on). Any insight would be really appreciated! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I'm so sorry your little kiddo is acting "off". I'll be totally honest - I'd never, ever take my dogs to a groomer...we groom all 3 of ours ourselves. When we first got Wylie, we tried a few groomers - and they ALL cut his quick and he was totally traumatized by it. To this day, EIGHT years later -- it's still a total battle to trim his claws. I think the groomers can be very, very traumatizing for some dogs - esp those who are just more sensitive. Those "dryer boxes" look super scary to me and I can't imagine having my precious ones in those things, honestly. Perhaps you should try to do the grooming yourself, is that an option? We have some good info/threads in our Grooming section here, to help you along. In any case, I just hope your little girl perks back up soon, poor little thing.

| I definitely think it's possible for our pups to become mad at us. My boy is quite mad at his daddy right now for yelling at him earlier when he was being naughty and putting him in a 10 min time out in his crate. It's been about 4 hours since the time out and Teddy isn't giving his dad any kisses or any attention lol. Luna was probably scared of the groomer and her surroundings. I've witnessed some groomers being very mean to some dogs and handling them extremely rough. I would just cuddle her up and give her extra treats, hopefully she will be a happy girl soon! |

| Ah, thank you! We went to the vet today (we were taking her anyway), and the vet suggested she was just tired. We'd taken her to the dog park before the groomers and the day before that, so we probably wore her out. Nevertheless, I think we'll take her to an independent groomer next time - it'll be more private and gentler, I think. If that doesn't work, we can look into grooming her ourselves - we're just really nervous about that. We know a groomer would do a better job than either of us could, and we don't want to hurt her. Thanks again! Oh, Edit: She's doing much better today. Nearly back to her old self! Last edited by luna_kp; 10-01-2014 at 02:19 PM. |

| I highly recommend 'private' groomer as it's one-on-one-on-one (you, groomer and your little one); the groomer has a vested interest in your return and takes personal responsibility. Piper isn't keen on being left with Tammy (usually 1/2 hr - hour), but Piper is fine when I pick her up, in no hurry to leave, and she looks, feels, smells wonderful! Plus, Tammy takes the time to listen and remember my requests for Piper---no perfume, very little trimming. I am much more comfortable taking Piper to a professional---a private one! Glad to hear your little one is back to normal! Is there such a thing with our yorkies?! |

| Private groomers are the best! I was lucky enough to find a very sweet woman who lives about 15 minutes from my house who has interacted with Teddy already. He hasn't been groomed yet but she invited me over to see her home and her procedures of how she does things. I was very pleased! I'm glad your little girl is back to her happy self! |

| I have 6 yorkies and a maltese. I think my maltese, dexter, is the most visibly angry of them all. He does pout and look away if he is mad. When we got our latest dog, when Beau would sit by him, he would look straight off the other way at the arm of the couch. It was hilarious. He is very expressive. Maybe it is more of a maltese trait than yorkie? I also groom at home, a little practice and it is easy-peasy!

| First off: LOVE your pups name! My little yorkie is named Luna too!! She gets mad at me after her baths and will hide under my daughter's bed. I just leave her there till she gets over it. Normally a short nap for her and she is back to her old self. The reason I am posting is because I worked at a groomers for a while. I quit my job there because I could not believe the way the dogs were treated!!! I won't go in to details but after watching people pick their dogs up and the groomer filling their he'd with ....oh she was sooooo good.... I had to just throw my hands up and quit! I promised myself my dogs would never go to a groomer again! I would rather her have a goofy at home hair cut than put her through the stress of a groomers. The only thing positive I got from that job was the ability to at least do a half ass decent job of grooming her myself. |
