YT Addict | Fear of riding in car throwing up. My little boy boo cannot take rides. The first time we took him he had a fit and would not be still. So i rolled the window down to go to stores and dog park. He seemed to be okay so long as he could hang his head out the window ( he has a chest collar and leash on. I hold the leash in one hand and hand in front of collar to keep it from choking him) . He loves this but its a short ride. Have taken him several times to help him get use to it. So today we were going to go see fall foliage. It was a three hour ride. Could not roll window down it was to cool. He was horribly restless. Put him on floor but he wanted back up. He threw up 4 times before we got back home. We did not go where we was heading i was afraid for him. Anyone else have this problem. I have always had my puppys at 8 weeks old and they learned to ride with us. But getting him at 5 months i doubt hes been in a car much. Most likely only to get shots. We will eventually have to go to colorado to get our things. I dont want to leave him. But if this happens we cant take him. We always take our babies. Anyone else have this happen with your baby? How did you fix it. Were home letting the little guy rest . Think i will give him some karo. Just to be safe. |

| Max cried in the car his entire first year. Giving him a dog car seat helped a lot, and then having his brother to share it helped. Try opening the window just a little bit to give him fresh air. Take short car rides daily and lengthen a little at a time. Give him a favorite blankie or toy in a car seat. You can also ask your vet for a prescription med like Cerenia, a motion sickness med. Or talk to your vet about using Benadryl (make sure you use the right one, no additives, which can toxic to dogs).

| I adopted Cody 10 months ago at age 2 ˝ y/o. He got car sick the very first day and every time he was in the car. So the only time he went in the car was to the vets office. Very upsetting to me because all my girls were just about raised in the car, never had a dog that got car sick, but these were puppies that I had at 8 weeks old and raised by me, not a rescue dog like Cody is.. I took my girls every where with me and wanted the same for my boy. Then I got him a booster seat, it’s suspended off the passenger seat and has a clip that attaches to his harness. From the first day he used the booster seat there was no panting, no wet muzzle from all the panting, no vomiting, he sits in his booster seat like he is a king sitting on his thrown while looking out of the window. I am soooo happy that I can now take him where ever I go. Now when I tell him Cody goes bye-bye in the car, he runs to where his harness is kept instead of hiding under the bed. He LOVES going in the car now. He hated the car before because he always got sick. Here is the seat I got him. Cody weighs 12 lbs, the booster seat below is a large, Cody has enough room to lay down and sleep, they sell xs, small, Med. and the large. This seat is suspended OFF the passenger seat so this one works perfect for him, Name of booster seat at Pet supplies….Tagalong Pet Booster Seat…large size holds up to 18 Lb dog.

| My vet gave me meds to be given 1 hour before traveling, I never used them. My vet visits were early in the morning so I would not give him food and held back water an hour before we would leave, that didn't work. I live on a mountain, all S turns and ups & downs, by time I got off the mountain he would have thrown up. This seat is great, he doesn't feel the road vibration like he did sitting on the seat. I have him in the front seat with me, I love glancing over at him and see enjoying the ride, looking out the window. A small investment for such a large reward.

| Get a car seat! ZoE loves her car seat. It's elevated, so she can see out the window, and is big enough for her to stretch out in and sleep on long trips. She prefers to have the window down, and for most trips around town I comply, weather permitting. I know it sounds a little nuts, but I talk to her using the same phrases. When we are going on a long trip (both my kids went to college on the other side of the state so we made frequent 2-3 hour trips), I'd say "lay down. we're going on the freeway" as I put her window up on the freeway entrance. She quickly learned that this meant we're going on a long trip, and she soon settled down.

YT Addict | Lol you guys crack me up. Hey i would sing and talk if it helped. Their our babies coarse we sing and talk to them. These seats sound great today he wiggled out of his harness to get out of the back seat. I tried that it seemed to work better than my lap. Hes not much of a lap dog either . So thought the back seat might helped till he threw up. So maybe one of the seats you all are talking about would help. My papilon rides what i call the upper bunk of my chest so she can see. So maybe two are in order one for each in the back seat. Oh cool just noticed my baby is my avitar lol |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I would ask the vet for a recommendation for something for his tummy before rides. My Dad had to do this w/ their dog for about the 1st year or so, and then she was fine w/ riding and no longer needs anything. So, any med could very well just be temporary. Anti-nausea meds are very benign/easy meds - so I wouldn't hesitate to get started with this, esp bc you don't want your kiddo to develop more and more and more anxiety toward being in the car, ya know? The sooner you get him passed this, the better for long term.

| My boy is almost 3 and he's just now getting over it and not puking everywhere. The car seat didn't even help. For him it was just time and going to fun places, also if I would take him on really short rides before he got sick it would be so much easier the next trip. Then if he got sick we would have to start from the beginning. It's like he was more scared of getting sick then the actual ride and when he saw he wouldn't get sick he would actually look forward to going. Giving him Pepcid before the ride also helped a lot. Now he doesn't need anything. Last edited by ilovejoel; 10-01-2014 at 12:42 PM. |
