| Grooming Winnie part 2!! Ok y'all.....I have been brushing and combing Winnie every day for a while....and she's still awful for it. She's so tiny and wiggly I am having a hard time getting her to sit still. While the majority of her is tangle free there are still some on her chest belly and legs...the hardest places for me to get. We are taking a break from combing right now....and she was chewing on me the entire time. She needs a bath really bad but I don't want to bathe her until I get these tangles out. I really need some advice on what to do to get her to sit still....is it OK to distract her with a toy or something....get her while she's sleeping and she wakes up and starts chewing at my fingers and the comb. I don't have a grooming table or loop yet....I used cornstarch on the tangles and it is much easier to get them out and I'm not pulling her skin...she just gets very bored right away and wiggles kicks and chews. I brush her for maybe 5 minutes four or five times a day. |

| I used to give Momo bully sticks to chew on while I groomed him. Otherwise, he'll attack the brush & whatever grooming tool I was using. He still does it now, but he'll tolerate it as long as I don't pull on a tangle, so I just cut it off. It's best to shave the under belly, arm pits, inner thighs, those are high rubbing areas which tends to tangle. They're sensitive areas also, so it's best to cut off the tangles w/a blunt nosed scissor instead of working it out. It's imperative that grooming time should not = ouch time when they're young pups. You want them to associate grooming time as special bonding time w/mommy or daddy. No scolding, only praises when she's good. If she acts up, give her a break. You can give her a bath & use a lot of conditioner. Massage the conditioner into the mats, really work it in & let the conditioner sit for 5-10 mins. You can wrap her in a towel while waiting so she doesn't get cold. Rinse well. Dry her completely w/a human dryer or pet dryer. Once the hair is 80% dry, you can brush the tangles out. It's harder to brush wet hair & it breaks easily. If it's a stubborn tangle close to the skin, you can snip once or twice w/blunt nosed scissors (some people prefer thinning shears), loosen it & brush it out. A conditioning/ detangling spray directly sprayed on the mat also helps loosen it. Line brushing works great. If you're not familiar w/it, that's when you pull up a section of hair & brush downwards in layers, working your way up. Brushing this way ensures that all the hairs are smoothed out. The brush will also go through the hair easier, little at a time & it doesn't pull on their sensitive skin. This works especially great on the legs, where they tend to tangle & most people don't really pay attention to that area. Hope that helps!

| Thank you mimimomo!!!! I have been doing the line brushing...although I didn't know that's what it was called lol which was working better. Honestly....she is great for a regular brushing if there are no tangles....but that's rarely the case. So I try to make sure if I have a spot that is tangle free I will just sit and comb her for a few minutes. She likes it. But if there's tangles....watch out haha. I will definately try something yummy for her to chew....right now she's just getting introduced to her new food after being on i/d for a week. So once she's adjusted we will be getting some bully sticks or little pig ears. After combing we did a bath...used extra conditioner and let it sit. Rinsed her good...and we dried and then combed. She's always a little calmer for a little longer after her bath so I tried working on her legs first. She did ok. But there's still two or three knots in her belly area. She tolerated it for about 15 minutes so when she got wiggly I quickly combed the snarl free areas, gave her one Zukes and let her go. I will snip those tangles in her belly tonight. I am a little nervous cutting her hair or shaving anything yet .....but I don't want to take her to the groomer until she has had a little more time after her shots. Her last one was two weeks ago and she will get her rabies shot tomorrow. So I will have to get over that! So shaving her belly and the back side of her legs would be recommended? I am growing her coat right now and excited to see what her coat will look like. She has amazing silver coming in like crazy!! I'm just afraid to cut any hair I may regret haha I worry more about her hair than my own!! I have not cut any hair on her ears (I do pluck the canals) but they seem to have no issues standing! Her hair is very fine and light on her ears and the rest of her body hair seems to be starting to fall in the right direction. It bounces when she walks. And I have not trimmed her feet....but they seem to the least tangled area she has! |
