I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Yeah, I agree with this too, again I think the AKC does a good job, but their specialty is record keeping and it's the only registry that really cares about the "purity of the breed of the dogs, they do genetic testing. Other registries just take the breeders word for it. So if you want a purebred, you'll have a better chance of getting one if the breeder is a member of the AKC.

| The AKC is the only reputable registry in the US but there are still puppy mills who use them and breeders who will forge papers and stuff so just AKC doesn't make them good and it is better then the other registries you can register anything with but definitely not perfect. The ytca has ethics and puppy mills will not bother being a member if there's.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | One problem is that there is no definition of puppy mill, we kind of know what it means, but some people think if you have over a certain number of dogs and the dogs live in kennels it's a puppy mill. I don't believe this, I think that weakens the word and while those may not be ideal conditions, they aren't harmful. Another problem is people pledge to abide by the rules, but that doesn't mean they will do it. Anybody can be hit with the greed bug.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I know, but it so hard to write a good law, one that doesn't hurt the good breeders and makes it more difficult for poor breeders. I've never seen a breeder here, even the good ones for ANY legislation. They fight it tooth and nail, and they are always so afraid it will make it impossible for them to breed and have their animals in the house. There is always loads of propaganda going on about any bill that is written, and this propaganda is sent out by the large commercial breeders, but they want the small home breeders to fight the bill. The truth is we all have to make sacrifices when it comes to ensuring dogs safety and proper breeding conditions. Pet owners can visit the breeder's home, and breeders can allow that. If they don't trust a person enough to come to their home, they shouldn't trust him enough to give him a pup.

| Making sure the pups are registered AKC is important because the AKC does the best job of monitoring breeders and they wont register mixes so at least you do know you are getting a purebred which you cant ensure with other registries. I doesnt mean you have a good breeder though you are still going to have to research your breeder and make sure they meet the criteria of what is important in a breeder. My Breeder registered her pups AKC but she also let them go at 7 weeks. She never mentioned health testing and her health guarantee was for 72 hrs so she wasnt a good breeder at all but I wasnt an experienced yorkie buyer either because it was my place to make sure she met certain criteria.

| Also, ask for references! Reputable breeders give out references, both from previous buyers and from their vet. You can also do a Google search on the breeder. Look for "(insert breeder's name here) reviews" or "(insert kennel name here) reviews" or "(insert breeder's name here) YorkieTalk" or "(insert kennel name here) reviews". If you aren't sure about a breeder, go ahead and post a thread in the Breeders or Breeders, Vet, and Groomers Reviews section here on the forum.

Well, I think the Ads on AKC are a fine place to start. You can see listings of purebred pups plus they highlight the breeders that are YTCA members and breeders of merit. After that, double check that they are club members (at YTCA website) and do a google search of the breeders name and the kennel name. Any bad reviews (and good ones too) will show up. It takes time and a lot of effort but it's worth it. Good luck. | |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Go to Dog shows This is rarely mentioned, but for those who live close to large cities, it is a very viable option. Step 1 www.akc.org Go to Events and Search by State and you will see all the dog shows coming up in your area for 12 months. Step 2 Go to www.infodog.com something called a Judging Schedule is posted ~2wks before the show date. There you will find out how many Yorkies are entered, and you can see the dogs in the ring. *Note www.ytca.org wil showcase what they Call Roving Specialities, and this will be where you get to see the largest number of Yorkies in a show. Now they may not occur in a city close to you, but it is worth checking out. Also Austin is a large enough city, that often times cities have something called All about Pet shows. Or Pet Exhibition, Many times the clubs will rent a booth to educate the public about their breed, and may have some Yorkies attending.
