| NEVER leave your little ones outside UNATTENDED! Chihuahua attacked, carried off by owl, family says | MLive.com TRAVERSE CITY, MI – A 5-pound Chihuahua named Pippa is recovering at home after what the family described as an owl attack early Thursday. The attack happened about 4:30 a.m. after 2-year-old Pippa headed outside for an early morning bathroom break, said owner Tara Send, 45. Send and her son, Forest Walters, were in their living room, with Send keeping an eye on Pippa through the sliding door, said Walters, 22. Then, in the course of a few moments – just long enough for Walters to read an email and Send to look away – Pippa was gone from the yard, but yelping. “It was horrible screaming,” Send said. “I ran outside the door of the porch and was just following where I heard her screaming from.” Particularly alarming were the location of Pippa’s cries, said Walters. He said the yelps were coming from the sky - and quickly moving farther away. Send followed the commotion and found Pippa on her back on the top of a hill, about 200 to 300 feet from the porch, Send and Walters said. “She was just a little bloody ball,” Send said. Pippa bit, scratched and struggled against Send as she attempted to bring the dog back into the house. Pippa likely didn’t know what had happened and thought she was still fighting her attacker, Send said. Walters and Send, who was still shoeless and wearing pajamas, then drove Pippa to the 24-hour Bay Area Pet Hospital, which they credit with saving the dog’s life. Pippa suffered at least four puncture wounds to her left side, several more to her right side and belly, and scratches, Walters said. He said he’s glad those are the only injuries and that his dog’s heart didn’t stop out of pure fear. After speaking with the veterinarian, the family is fairly certain the Chihuahua was attacked by an owl, based on the puncture wounds and time of day, Walters said. “We make fun of her because she’s feisty, but that fire within her saved her life,” Walters said. Still, Walters said Pippa’s wounds go deeper than the puncture wounds. Despite her pain medication making her woozy, the Chihuahua is extremely anxious and seems scared of everything – including Send’s seven children. Send said Pippa has had trouble sleeping, staying wide-eyed in her bedroom. But Send won’t let anything else happen to her dog. She plans to keep Pippa on a leash anytime they are outside from now on, and encourages others with small pets to do the same. “It sounds like common sense but it’s something we should have given more thought,” Send said. For now, the family is glad the ordeal ended as happily as it could have. “It was the worst possible way you could start a day,” Walters said. “She’s a part of this family. We would have been lost without her.”

| What a terrible ordeal for poor little Pippa. I am so glad she was able to survive the ordeal but now she is still suffering it over and over from what you wrote. I feel your pain for what happened to her. Thank goodness she is a feisty little girl for that must have saved her life. If she bit and scratched and struggled against you I would like to see the owl that got her and then let her go. She must have fought really hard to get it to release her thank goodness. I hope it does not take her too long to overcome how she is so scared right now. It will take some time I imagine. Poor little one. Thank you for telling us the story also that we are careful when our little ones go outside. Much appreciated. I had never heard of things like this happening till I got on the forum. Heard of one other one that was not so fortunate. So sad that this happens. Let us know how she does in days to come. Hoping she recovers soon.

| omg that's so sad, poor little thing. We brought our two dogs to the tennis courts where we let them go off leash some times so they can run around and get some exercise. It was all going good until one day a hawk flew down and sat right on the fence staring at my Onion, whose only 5 lbs. It was a good thing his brother whose much bigger was standing right next to him at the time. I chucked a ball at the fence and scared the hawk off while my wife picked Onion right up. I'd imagine it'd be over for Onion that day if things weren't how it went, I think the hawk hesitated because Pickle was next to him, he wanted to wait for a blind spot. Poor Onion didn't have a clue any of this even occurred.

| That sure sounds scary that hawk staring at your Onion like that. I guess Pickels is a much bigger dog if the hawk did not want to come after your Onion. I am so glad it turned out well and that Onion did not even know he was in any danger. Thanks for sharing.

| This has been one of my biggest fears since we got Puff. She weighs 6.5-7 lbs but never goes outside unless she's got on her Buddy Belt harness and a leash, or someone carrying her. It amazes me that people don't think of this! Last summer I decided that we were going to start taking the pups to daycare a few days a week. We went on the tour and everything was great (this is the biggest and most established doggy daycare in the area) and I asked about predatory birds and what precautions they take. He replied that in 10 years nobody had ever asked that question! Even worse, he had no answer for me since it had never come up! We never went back. Seeing my baby carried off by a bird is something that I know in my heart I would NEVER recover from!

Senior Yorkie Talker | Im glad pippa is ok and back with her family. Im also glad that her wolf instinct kicked in and allowed her to fight tooth and nail for her precious life. This is a constant reminder that You can never take too many precautions with these little babies. I never leave her outside unattended and even when we go out im sure to use her harness and leash.not only do you have to worry about winged predator taking your pup you have to worry about the animals with 2 legs too (humans). Ive read about pups being stolen out of their own backyard. I would never forgive myself if something were to happen to my honey bun.

| A couple years ago my Cali was attacked by a hawk while playing with her ball in the back yard. There is no way I can't tell you how fast it all happened. Cali (3.5 pounds) fought like a tiger and killed the hawk. Fish and wild life did not believe she killed it (broke its neck) and I got fined $10,000 because they were sure I had killed it because they saw Cali as too small Long story short, all ended well (with the help,of a good attorney who kept me out of jail), but we went through 2 years of major anxiety issues with Cali, now fortunately resolved. DO NOT underestimate these predators. They are fast, deadly and have survived doing what they do! Our little ones, in general are not prepared to deal with them.

| I am so sorry Cali had to undergo what she went thru but she was a good fighter to be able to fend a huge hawk off and even kill it. So good for her that she was never carried off but I am so sad she had to suffer for two whole years because of the incident. It is good that you all are sharing these stories to help others understand there is this definite world danger out there and we need to be ever vigilant with our little ones. Thank you for sharing your story too and I am so glad she is past the trauma and can live her life without that fear any more. Least ways I am understanding from what I read that she is over it all now.

| I was sitting on my back deck drinking coffee last saturday. Cocoa my Yorkie was exploring the yard chasing a cricket or something. I looked up and a coyote was coming towards her. I yelled at the Coyote and it didn't run. It just stopped and looked at me. I jumped up and went toward it and it ran off. Then Cocoa started chasing it. I got her stopped before she chased it off into the woods. |

| I remember that! Callie is so so brave! I can't believe you got fined & had to hire an attorney...but glad all turned out well. People that are knowledgeable w/predatory birds say 'they can't carry off a small dog weighing more than them, they (the predatory birds) only weigh 3-4#'s'. We had a HUGE hawk land on our patio railing when we lived in LA & it looked bigger than my 7# Mimi. The wing span covered the whole 10+ feet of the sliding glass window...Wow it was a beautiful & terrifying sight! Well, what happened to Pippa & many other small dogs proves that they can carry off their prey that is heavier than them! If they can't hold onto them, the fall will cause more injury & possibly even death. Those that are too big to be carried off will have puncture wounds from the sharp talons! I always scan the sky when we're outside in our backyard. If I see a hawk gliding near or far, we all go inside. Always be on high alert!

| OMGoodness, poor little Pippa. So glad she's survived this ordeal, but how terrifying that must have been for her! I don't leave Billi alone during the day, I couldn't imagine when it's dark outside. Just because we take our own safety for granted, doesn't mean we can do the same for our furbabies.

| Wow, how scary! I am glad to hear the puppy survived and is healing. I cannot imagine how traumatizing that must have been for the poor dog and family

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | SO SCARY!! Poor little Pippa...I'm so glad they got her back and that she will be okay. An owl could easily carry off my Marcel or Pfeiffer, a bigger owl could even get Wylie.
