| New puppy problems We introduced a new Shih Tzu puppy to Lexi yesterday. Lexi is also still a puppy (8 months old). Things went pretty well, except with playing. When they start play fighting Lexi growls constantly. I'm not too concerned with a little growling because she even did this when I would play tug-o-war with her. But Lexi will constantly pounce on and bite at (play biting, it looks like) the new puppy and will not let up even when the new pup is trying to get away. When the new puppy eats or drinking Lexi will not bother him and will even eat and drink with him sometimes. I know Lexi doesn't hate the new puppy, but it's like she just doesn't know when to stop. Should I be concerned and stop the behavior? I've never had 2 dogs before and don't really know what's 'normal". Thanks! |

| Thanks Chachi... When I see Parker trying to get away I do stop it. It's like Lexi gets mad when Parker tries to get away, and I'm not sure how to teach her that when he done playing, you need to stop. I also forgot to mention. Lexi is usually the one that starts the playing, but sometimes Parker will too. It usually starts out great, but seems to escalate, mainly when Parker is trying to get away. |

| Maybe you can say stop lexi and break them apart and when she stops and settles down say good Lexi and give her a treat. The only way to do this affectively is to have the treats readily available so you can have one in your hand readily available when you break it up. My dogs will do anything for a milos kitchen steak griller treat. I know when I put that on here Im going to get heck for that brand because they are a grocery store treat but thats the treat mine will do anything for and it works for me

| Only give her a treat you want to give her the idea you are treating her for an action she is doing. If you want to treat them both do it at a separate time

| I have a Shih Tzu and a Yorkie as well, but for me it was the opposite. My shih Tzu ( Zeus) was a year ol when I got my Yorkie ( Athena). the advice the others gave you I agree with an think is good. I would defiantly try the treat thing. Its just something she has to learn. she dosnt realize this is a little one and cant play as long as her. As for the growling, you probably just have a very vocal girl. My athena is like that to. When we first brought her home at SIX WEEK OLD I use to get so worried because she growled like crazy at her bigger brother an looked like she was trying to tear him apart despite her tiny self. LOL "SHES A TERRIER" thats what I learned real quick and she was simply acting like a terrier. Despite the way they played, they loved each other to death. Zeus was very protective of her ( not aggressively) but he slept with her to keep her warm, got upset when I took her to the vet, and when we got back had to check her over and make sure she was ok. To this day they are the best of friends. Athena is now 8 months old. Last edited by R-Teddy; 09-07-2014 at 05:39 PM. |

They are so cute, thanks for the sharing the videos. I need to get that toy! Do they still play fight like that? How long was it until you trusted them alone together while out? I know it's going to be a while until I completely trust them alone, but I know I will be really nervous the first time.

Yes they still play fight like that and worse sometimes now that Athena is as big as Zeus is. Sometimes I would swear they are killing each other, have even gone out in a rush to make sure they werent a few times. but no, they are just playing and perfectly happy. I started leaving them alone together when Athena got big enough to hold her own against Zeus. I cant remember what age that was, but I guess when she was almost as big as he was. Athena is a big yorkie girl however. now weighs 11 pounds at 8 months old. Last edited by R-Teddy; 09-08-2014 at 05:49 PM.

Thanks for the info. The last couple days have been a little better. Lexi doesn't obsess over the puppy as much, but I still break them up every once in a while when it seems to be getting too rough. Here is a video I took of them today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHhNIoWQA9M

| Kenzie (8 + lbs and 1yr) will be to ruff with Tilly ( 5 lbs and 8months). I will say "Kenzie, enough for now" and she will stop. Most of the time when she leaves, her sister Tilly will jump on her to play more. They both growl a lot and bark and run and chew on each others faces and ears. If someone yips the other one will sniff and lick where she hurt her sister. |
