| Brushing- how often? I wanted him to have long hair, I thought it would be easy as long as I brush him every day then it was 2x then 3x a day and he still gets mats on him. I use good shampoo and conditioner and brush a lot and I cant keep up so I guess I know why ya don't see too many long haired yorkies unless they are in a show. lol. Hoping that someone knows something I don't that Would help |

| The longer hair is definitely going to require more maintenance, especially with brushing several times a day. You might have to try a few conditioners for your dog, because what works great for one, might not work so great for your dogs needs. Make sure you use a really good detangler when you brush your dog- never brush him dry. It'll break his hair and dry/improperly moisturized hair will mat a lot easier. Yeah, this is why I ended up cutting most of my dogs hair down. I leave her legs and head long, but face and body is short. Was too much work for me. But if you get a good routine going, it can be done! Good luck!

| From your other posts it sounds like you dog is still a puppy, the puppy coat tends to knot easily. I'd cut his hair shorter for now and try again when he's a bit older. He may also have a cotton coat, if that's the case it'll be very hard to keep it long. If he's only matting is specific spots, like under his arms, you can cut the hair without effecting the look of his coat. When you brush him are you using a spray conditioner/detangler? My dog has long hair, half way between her body and the floor, her coat is silky and I brush her every day or every other day. I wouldn't keep it long if I had to brush her more than once a day, neither of us would enjoy that. |

| yes his is 5 months old, not using a detangler cuz I am using pantene conditioner and I thought I wouldn't need it extra. I caught him lil while ago kneeding his hair into matt with his teeth on his arms |

| Cali is 6 years old and I brush her once a day. Her coat is full length and just about never mats. She loves to be brushed so sometimes when she hears the music for the news she will bring me her brush because she know I will sit down for a while! I think the quality of the coat must be really important because I hear some people struggle with it. For us it is easier to just let it grow and brush once a day (sometimes every other day) than it is to run to the groomer all the time. Maybe your problem is puppy hair.

I saw in another thread you bath your yorkie every 3-4 days. IMO this is too often, especially combined with using pantene. Pantene isn't great stuff, the shampoo is full of harsh sulfates and the conditioner is full of silicone. I also don't agree with using people shampoo on a dog because the pH is different. However, I have heard people with beautiful yorkies say they use pantene. The thing with silicones is they coat your hair making it so moisture can't get in and you have to use harsh sulfates to remove them to prevent build up. I'd cut back to full washing once a week, you can do butt/private and paw washes more often. I use shampoos with coconut cleansers and silicone free conditioners. Espree products are popular. Jenny (mimimomo) carries espree products and madan brushes, a lot of us love our madan brushes. Espree I use a coconut cleaner shampoo (I have a few I rotate) and ion extreme moisture creme from sally beauty. I wash Lola's hair, rinse well, condition it and don't rinse all the conditioner out. I also mix the ion conditioner with water in a spray bottle and use it as a spray conditioner. Ion Extreme Moisture Creme Also are you just brushing or brushing and combing? If you aren't combing you might not be getting all the little knots out. It took me awhile to learn you have to get down to the skin, pay special attention near the base of the ears, the chest, and the legs. Lift the front legs forward and up to get the armpit area too. | |
