| A Newbie with Questions! Hello everyone. I am in the process of adopting a senior teacup Yorkie named Neeko. I have lots of dog experience, but not with a dog so small--Neeko is currently only 2 pounds!! The rescue group can't tell me much about him, other than he doesn't have any teeth and has a pretty severe malocclusion! Here are some questions I have: Bald ears: I've attached a couple of pics and you can see his ears are bald. I've read that this could be due to leather ear? Tips on treating it? Will the hair grow back?? There isn't ANY hair on his ears right now. Feeding: He seems pretty underweight. What is the best/safest way to put weight on him, given his missing teeth/malocclusion, other than feeding him more often than normal? For example, are there any calorie rich dog foods that any of you would recommend that wouldn't cause stomach problems? Mix-breed: Is he all Yorkie or mixed with something? His coloring is right, but his ears are SO big. It could be that they just look big because they are bald, but what do you think? Thanks! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and welcome to YT ! He looks like a real little cutie pie! Those ears kill me, how adorable are they??!! As far as leather ear, I don't know enough about it, but I'm not sure if you'll ever get hair there again...hopefully someone else will know more about this. He does look yorkie to me, despite his bigger ears. For adding calories, I'd try things that are calorie-dense, such as bits of cheese and little blobs of peanut butter. You could also add bits of coconut oil to his meals.

| I would recommend a vet visit about the ears to see if it is leather ear or needs treatment. I and several friends found that Freshpet roasted chicken adds weight FAST to dogs even when that isn't the goal Dogs love it, it's healthy and it's easy to find. You have to use an open bag in a week in refrigerator but I freeze half of it and it freezes just fine. I cut the pieces in half for my little girl but it's not too inconvenient. Congrats on your new addition! |

| He is definitely a cutie. My Brandi had huge ears too but it was only noticeble when her hair was cut like his. Once the hair grew back her ears didn't look so big. As for underweight, make sure there isn't any underlying illnesses. Brandi was so small but she was in liver failure and had other issues so if it hasn't already be done, be sure to get a thorough check up. |

| He looks like a precious little baby fox in a way. So adorable! Looks to me like he might have a mix of something in him and maybe a case of leather ear but visit to a vet who has a large small-dog practice should tell you what all his problems and physical needs are. Some Yorkies have very sensitive GI-tracts that sometimes seem to get more sensitive as they age and cannot eat very rich foods so just be sure to feed only small amounts of high-fat foods to him at first to see how he tolerates them and get him to the vet should he begin to vomit, have diarrhea or a distended, gassy tummy. Yorkies often get pancreatitis easily from eating too-rich food and some have MVD, which usually means they need to be on a special hepatic diet consisting of easily-digestible, low protein. He's just adorable and I bless you for being willing to take this precious little elder boy into your home and give him a healthy, happy, safe and loved life for the rest of his days.

| It's awesome that you are rescuing this guy. I'm not sure about the ears. He could be a mix but it's hard to tell. You could try canned puppy food for more calories. You might want the vet to tell you how much they think he should weigh just so you don't add to much weight.

| Had a friend who's Yorkie had Black Ear which I understand is like Leather Ear. Her vet said it was no doubt a fungus. It encompasses the whole ear and no hair was present. She did treatments on the ear several times a day on both sides. Never totally cleared up but did not get worse. Cute little pup you have there! Bless you for giving an older pup a good life

| A quick update Neeko is home! He seems to be adjusting well to the family and isn't intimidated by our big dogs. The vet said to try the Lotrimine treatment on the ears and to add baby food and/or egg to his regular food for weight gain. If he tolerates that, we can try other things. I teach at a small liberal arts college that is very dog friendly. Neeko went to work with me yesterday. My students love him and he loves all the attention.

| He's really cute, kudos to you for giving him a wonderful home. I will warn you, with his good looks and charm he will be very popular at your college. You are going to fall in love with him more than you can possibly imagine. Yorkies have that gift. Your students are going to miss him when he doesn't come to class. |
