| Lets all help each other What I love about Yorkie Talk is I feel we can learn from each other. We all have yorkies and we all know our yorkies. I am getting conflicting answers from vets. I have a very itchy 6 month old puppy that does a quick fast cough like a clearing of the throat. Some vets are telling me allergies because she itches and she does the quick cough. I have other vets telling me she is too young to have allergies and she has collapse trachea. Some vets squeeze her throat and say yes allergies and some squeeze her throat and say CT. So which one is it!! I have been to three different vets. So my question is and I hope a lot of people that read this will comment. Have you ever had a dog with itchy skin and a cough? Did you ever find out if it was due to allergies or CT and what helped their allergies? Thanks Yorkie Mom |

Hi, just saw this post after already posting my other thread about the same topic. I think some of the problem is that a cough in a dog can mean many different things and still sound the same. There is no definite way to know without further testing. My vet thinks CT, but even she said she can't tell 100% just from the cough. I am going to try the Claritin like Wylie's Mom mentioned in my thread for 2 weeks. If it helps the itching and coughing then I know it's allergies, if it doesn't then at least I can rule that out. Hopefully others will respond to either your or my thread with more personal experience!

I'm sorry to hear that you're getting conflicting info from vets. I have gone through the same thing with a dog behaviourist and I know how annoying and frustrating it can be when you just want the best for your dog. I would suggest using the allergy meds and if they don't work going back to the vet for further testing. Does your dog have any other symptoms besides itchiness and cough ie swelling of eyes or sneezing? I know my dog has allergies cuz his eyes swell up when he runs through fresh cut grass.

| It may just be my imagination, but it seems like we are having a "bumper crop" on CT!!! I have never seen so many pups diagnosed with CT as I have seen recently on YT!! What in the world is going on out there with all these babies coming up with CT????? |

YT 500 Club Member | Yorkiemom1 I think what is happening is more dogs have it than owners realize. Some owners are more parinoid with there dogs than others and when they cough they automatically think CT. I am one of those mothers! LOL. I went to my mother in laws and her daushaund coughed well drinking water and then again after playing with my puppy and it is the exact cough my dog did and I asked her if she knew why he did it and she said no he always does it no biggie! Now me I panic every time my dog does it!! LOL |

| What do you mean by squeezing? Ct would not make her itch. Have you tried an allergy medicine if it stops the itching but not the cough then it's probably ct.

| What I mean by squeezing is they press down on the trachea with there fingers and slightly squeeze it and if it makes the dog cough then they say they have collapse trachea. |

Well, my dog coughs if the harness is pulled to correct him ... I'm sure he doesn't have CT. I don't know anything about it as I've never had a dog with CT but I wish you luck on figuring this out!

| I don't think they all have it. It happens when a pup with CT surfaces...everyone with a dog that coughs thinks it might be CT. I cannot imagine a vet diagnosing a pup with CT without really conclusive evidence.

| OP if you have three different vets giving you different diagnosis; maybe you should try a specialist.

YT 500 Club Member | It seems like a lot of dogs that are on a leash and pull can making that coughing noise. So basically according to vets that should mean they all have CT. Because that to me is the same thing as a vet pushing on their neck. I doubt ever dog that is on a leash and coughs has CT. Is there such thing as a weak trachea. Maybe some dogs just have a weak one and thats why they cough |

| I can understand coughing while pulling on a leash or even harness (Lexi does). Heck, if someone pushed on my neck hard enough I would probably cough too! It's when they cough at other times too that is concerning. yorkieowners - I don't think you answered my question from earlier. When does your pup usually cough and how often? |
