| Good Growing Clippers??? I currently have an andis clippers set for grooming. They're the pink soft ones. I've had them for quite some time as I used to groom my previous yorkie with them. They were ok, on a scale from 1 to 10 I'd rate them a 5. They worked on when I first started using them but overtime quickly started fading. I'm looking to buy a different grooming/clippers set now and would greatly appreciate any feedback on what people are currently using. My little guy is 6 months and sometime he stays still and sometimes not so I am looking for a great set that works well and fast. Please let me know. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I've heard the Wahl clippers are really good - have you looked into those?

| I've not looked into them but will. I know the best ones are the Oster brand they use in grooming places and at the vet when they have to shave a dog's area prior to surgery, but those seem too big to hold for my tiny little guy. The blades are also too wide and heavy as well. But, I'll check on the Wahl ones you mentioned. Thanks. |

| I've never used an Oster, so can't rec, but everyone that has one loves it. I personally have Andis & Wahl clippers. Love both, super quiet & works great. My Andis is the kind where different blades are used. It's not clunky or heavy. Here's a thread about it: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...room-home.html My Wahl is the kind where it has 5 blades in 1. It's cordless, super quiet & very light. I use this one the most, it's perfect for trimming their paws, tipping ears, sanitary trims. It also comes w/plastic combs that you can use to trim their body. I personally have not used the combs, so can't give any reviews on it. Wahl Arco Pro Purple Pet Cordless Clipper Kit at Blain's Farm & Fleet Wahl also makes another cordless clipper called Bravura.

| Thanks. For Mimimom in terms of the Andis that has 5 blades in 1. Can you tell me the # settings on them. The reason I ask is that I have the regular Andis that has 3 separate blades (#10, #7 and #4). The #10 cuts the most hair and the lower the number the more hair is left on the dog. I just saw an Oster that also has 5 blades in 1 and their numbers are (9, 10, 15, 30, 40). I don't know but it seems as thought #30 and 40 might be to a high of a number and will leave virtually no hair on the dog...lol Here's the link: Dog Grooming Clippers: Oster Freestyle Clipper Please let me know what your 5-in-1 numbers are and how you use them. |

| You can't beat Oster clippers. They are real work horses. I have used one, model A5, on my schnauzer for years. They are heavy but as far as blade widths, you can get narrow cut oster blades so the actual width of cut can be pretty small with these. I recently bought one of the small Andis clippers as I read they were very quiet and thought they might work better for ears on my little guy. The Andis clippers don't cut as well IMO but they are a little quieter (My little guy still doesn't like it.). You are correct in that the #30 and #40 blade will cut very close. | The Wahl 5 in 1 has: #9, #10, #15, #30, and #40 blades https://www.petedge.com/zpetedgemain...8655A0AFEC2FB3 For blades, the higher the #, the shorter the cut. You're correct, #40 is considered surgical blade, vets use this blade to shave down for surgical prep. It can also be used under combs (also #30). Groomers use it for Show Poodle trim, but it's safest to use a #15 against the grain. If you're wanting to clip their body w/blades, I recommend getting a trimmer w/separate blades. Bc you can't use the cordless 5 in 1 style to trim their body (unless you use the combs), the blades will leave too little hair on the body, even w/ a #9. Unless it gets really hot & humid where you are & they have thick hair. Silky thinner haired pups will look shaved w/a #9 (which is the longest blade in the 5 in 1). Might cause clipper burn & irritation, even sunburn. To trim their body, I use my Andis w/a #7FC or #6FC blade for my thick cottony soft furball Momo & #4FC or #5FC for my other 3 w/silky hairs. The Oster you linked looks just like the Wahl, but it has a lower motor power. So I would think it would be louder than the Wahl & vibrate more, but not much. The Andis set you have sounds like a good set...are the blades dull? You can send them in to get it sharpened or google 'clipper blade sharpening' in your area. If nothing is wrong w/the blades, then maybe all you need to do is get a new clipper.

| Hmmm. You're very knowledgable but now I'm confused on what to do. The Andis I have are ok and now I think that the Oster or any 5-in-1 blade set will probably not work (as these mostly come in 9, 10, 15, 30, and 40. My Yorkie has a short hair coat (not silky) and I would be stuck because his body/hair would be left bare with the higher number blades alone (as you mentioned) and I won't be able to use the comb attachments. I had previously tried using the combs attachments that came with my Andis clipper but it doesn't work because there is not enough hair on his body for the comb to catch even to start with (and he's a very small size). I view these comb attachments better for medium to larger size dogs that have a lot of hair on them to begin with. Anyway, I have to think of what to do. Thanks. |

| You wouldn't be using the Oster that you linked to trim his body hair. It's useful for sanitary trims, paw pads & ear tipping. You can use the #10 on your Andis to do all that. You would use either the #7F or #4F blade of the Andis to trim his body. To use a comb, there has to be some length of hair & it will not take off much unless the comb is a very small/ short one.

| Thanks for your response. I don't think then that the oster is right for me. I guess I can either get new blades, get them sharpened, or buy a new set altogether. |

| Hi mimimomo, do you know if there is a grooming clipper set where they are: multiple blades in one or interchangeable individual blades that the blades would be like #10, #7, & #4 but that the clipper is cordless As you know I have the pink andis one but it is corded and quite annoying to manipulate. Thanks. |

| The only clipper set with those blades are the pet trimming kit that comes in a set. I personally have not tried them so I can't tell you how the clippers are. Usually, the clipper in a kit has lower motor power, esp if it's inexpensive. There's mixed reviews on amazon, some people say it doesn't cut, some say it gets too hot, some love it! If you're seriously going to groom @ home, I recommend investing in a good clipper & buy the blades individually or in a set. The new clipper comes w/a #10 blade, so all you need to do is purchase one for the body. Either a #4F or #5F if your guy is silky haired or #5F or #7F for thick soft cottony hair. Oh & I don't know of any that are cordless...

| Thanks you are spot on. I feel the Andis set does have a lower motor which although quieter it tends to not cut well because of the slowness. If it's slow then it usually does not grab the hair well to cut. Also i t definately gets hot. It typically takes about an hour to groom and the blades get hot. I'll probably do what you recommend which is to buy a good clipper and get the blades separately. Thanks again. |
