| I read something about... Soft coats on Yorkies and hunched backs not being desirable. I am not planning on breeding or showing and did not even get papers on my new girl but she does at 9 1/2 weeks have a softer coat and it is wavy and kind of all over the place but seems to be the same in a lot of photos of Yorkies her age. She also has a bit of a roached back but not bad. Should I be concerned about either of these? Last edited by Yoshismom1969; 08-25-2014 at 06:13 PM. Reason: Picture did not show |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk. She is much too young to determine if she will have a cotton or silky coat, and the coat will continue to change for about 2 more years. Either is coat will be beautiful, nothing to worry about. As far as her back, don't worry about that either. Tiki had a bit of a hunched/roach back for the first 6 months, then it all straightened out. She is a doll, don't worry, just enjoy her.

| I think its hard to tell the coat type at such a young age. Not sure if the back is a concern at this age. I couldn't see it in the picture. She sure is cute though!

| A good indicator in the type of coat is the eye shine from a camera flash. If the eyes reflect green then the coat will be silky. If it reflects red/orange the coat will be cottony. As for the hunch, I'm not 100% sure but if you check this website out Seminar on the Yorkshire Terrier it gives you an idea of what judges look for. What's desirable and what's not? I would also ask your vet why your new baby has a hunch. It could be something medical and she can certainly grow out of it since she's only 9.5 weeks.

| As others noted above, a hunched back is not necessarily a medical problem, but the Yorkie standard (the ideal) is for a straight topline. Yorkie exhibitors will sometimes say that a dog's topline is so beautifully straight, they could serve tea on it. The straightness of a topline also affects movement, which is one of the things judged in Yorkie conformation.

| Thank you. I have a long coat Chihuahua that I had actually considered showing but his topline was roached and did not even out until he was about 1 1/2 and by that time I had him neutered, LOL! We could kick ourselves over that now as he conforms very well to the standard. I have also shown my past Dane in conformation so I know a little about the standards and the ring, etc... But not as familiar with Yorkies so hoping it would not cause her any issues with her walking, etc.. in her future ;-) Thanks for the compliments on my little girl. She is a very sweet girl that loves to cuddle and give kisses but when she is ready to play she is wide open, LOL! |
