YorkieTalk Newbie! | We won't stay calm My yorkie is getting neutered in 4 days and after the surguery he has to stay calm so that the stitches won't open. Does anybody have tips for me to keep him calm |

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | I have never heard of any stiches coming out from movement, more so with excessive licking and tugging by the pup. A head cone would be good so he doesn't extensively lick his stitches. Using bellybands would also work and for the calming not much you can do other than keep him away from anything that would excite him and be sure that you don't allow him to jump up on anything. Some people use pet carriers to carry their pups around to prevent them from moving around too much. When my pups got theirs done they spent a lot of time in the cage when I was not able to be by their side to supervise their behavior. They also all wore the belly bands to prevent licking or pulling.

When Lexi got spayed we were told not to let her do any jumping because when they jump their skin pulls or stretches which could pull on the incision area. I think we were also told light to moderate activity, but that is hard for a very active puppy. She was back to wanting to run and play by the middle of the next day. She probably ran around more that she should have, but 2 weeks is a long time to keep a yorkie puppy "calm". And Lexi's incision healed just fine. Just make sure he doesn't bite or lick the stitches.

| Max tried jumping the first day and had some bruising as a result. He limited himself after that. I held him a lot and carried him on his walking route while his activity had to be limited. An xpen helps for when you can't be nearby.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I didn't have any trouble w/ either of my boys...you just want to keep them more confined and watch them for jumping up and down...you want them to avoid that and instead you should lift them up and down.

| Another reason to crate train early. Our Vet keeps overnight but will let Ginger come home at 5:30 since we have her crate trained and will confine her |

| My female, Malley was spade 8 days ago and it took about a week for her to be her "old, crazy" self. First few days they are so tired that they sleep. In lieu of a cone, I used a belly band on her and it keeps the stitches covered and free from coming in contact with anything. It beats wearing a cone for 2 weeks! My yorkie is very energetic and I carry her up/down steps and try to keep her from jumping off furniture as much as possible. I check the stitches to make sure that everything looks normal. |

Gosh, I wish it took my girl a week to get back to her crazy energetic self. She was back to herself the next day! Made it very difficult to keep her from wanting to jump up and down off the couch like she usually does.
