| reverse sneeze or tracheal collapse Hey everyone. Ever since I had Lexi she would sometimes make this funny sound after drinking. It is not every time and usually after running around and then drinking a lot of water really fast. I always thought it was reverse sneezing until someone on here mentioned that it is rare in puppies. After looking at other you tube videos of both reverse sneezing and tracheal collapse I'm still not sure. Here is a video I took today. It doesn't last very long (and never does) so listen carefully. What do you all think? Should I take this video to the vet to get their opinion? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMopfKgfu2s |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | To me, it kind of sounds more like kennel cough. Is this is a puppy, first of all? If yes, I'd then lean toward kennel cough also. Did she recently have the bordatella vaccine...bc that can actually cause kennel cough. If this is a puppy and you suspect KC, you do want to get her to the vet for meds bc KC can progress to pneumonia in puppies and get very serious.

I just looked at some videos of kennel cough and it does sound like it, but she got her bordatella vaccine at 5 month old and she is now 7 months old. Also, she has been doing this since she was 3 months old. And she only does it after drinking. Is it still possible to have it even with all of those factors? Now I'm even more confused!

Has it gotten worse or stayed the same? Lexi's has not gotten any worse. Let me know what your vet says too. Make sure you get it on video to show the vet. I am going to try to get a better video of Lexi doing it. Seems like whenever I try to get a video after she drinks she doesn't do it!

| It would definitely be worth taking the video to your vet to let him have a listen and explain to him as you did to us when it all started and so on..... Having the video is a great way to show or tell him as he can actually hear her. It is hard to duplicate a sound a dog makes to tell the vet I know from experience. |

| I wish I'd had a way to record my Lacey's breathing sounds to take to my vet for him to hear what I was trying so unsuccessfully to imitate for him. It might have gotten her help sooner for her heart problem. Hope you get help from your vets with this and it is not serious. |

| I was doing a little more research today and found some info about dogs doing this sound (kind of like clearing her throat). A few websites mentioned this can occur when dogs drink too fast, which Lexi does after running around. Like I said, it only happens when drinking, and never when running around which she does a lot. I am almost positive it's not kennel cough and wondering if it's just from the drinking too fast. I will talk to my vet about it at her next appt. and show her the video. Thanks everyone! |

| It does sound a lot like kennel cough...a bordatella vaccination is not a garuntee she won't contract it....if you lift her chin and rub her throat a little does she cough? |

I tried it, and no cough. With kennel cough though, wouldn't it happen other times too? Your right, the sound does match the sound of kennel cough, but I just don't think that's what it is. But, I could be wrong. I will just have to talk with the vet to know for sure. I did briefly mention it to the vet a while back, and she did not seem concerned, but I will bring it up again and this time have it on video.

| hmmmm....well I think you would definitely be safe to ask a vet...and if you have mentioned it before and gotten no concern I might think about a different vet....in small dogs everything should at least get a look!! I hope its just allergies or her being a piggie with her water and getting a little "down the wrong pipe" response! what color are her gums? sometimes with collapsed trachea their gums have kind of a blue tint to them.... deedeebear-- Do you know how a collapse tracheal is treated? The vet I worked for (depending on the severity)would treat with anything from cough syrup to some sort of bronchodilators (sp) |
