| playing with toys correctly Lexi loves to play with her toys and her favorite is tug-o-war. But when she plays this, she starts of fine pulling on the toy, but then will start to grab at it higher and higher towards my hand and if I don't let go she will get my hand with her teeth. I don't think she is trying to bite, she is just trying to get the toy away from me. She will do this with any toy and when she wants to play, she will grab a toy and push it up against my hand to try and get me to play. I try ignoring her, but every time I try to play again she still does it. I refuse to play tug-o-war with her anymore, instead when she has a toy in her mouth I will just grab another toy to throw for her. Also, when playing catch she will sometimes drop the ball, but when I go to grab it, she will quickly get it sometimes getting my hand in the process. Now I will slowing go for the ball, and when she jumps at it I will not play with her or grab a different ball instead. I just don't know if this is normal for puppies and what I can do to get her to stop this behavior. Oh, and she's 7 months old. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I think you're managing it really well. Puppies are so mouth-focused so I'm not surprised she is doing this. She may grow less bitey/mouthy as she grows out of puppyhood. If playing w/ her, I'd tell her "no" every time she bit up farther on the toy where my hand was, and then pause, then start the game over, maybe? I too have to be careful when fetching w/ my Wylie bc he too will put the ball down and then go to grab it again, and if he accidentally gets your hand - OUCH. It doesn't happen as much now, but once in a while it still does. I suppose I could make him sit every time he puts the ball down, but I just don't do it - it seems more fun for him to fetch w/out having to sit each time (kind of a pain too). But that's another option for you once she learns how to sit.

Thanks for the reply. Hopefully she will get better with this. The funny thing is, I could go to grab a toy she is not even playing with, but if she sees me grabbing for it she will go for it too. It's like she thinks I'm stealing her toys or something! Will be interesting to see how she is with the new pup we are getting at the end of this month. I'm worried there will be fighting over toys.

| I have yet to meet a dog of any type, that didn't play tug-o-war like this, Gina still does and as she gets closer to my hand I just grab the other end. Cheers Quad & Gina

| Almost all dogs are challenged by tug-o-war and playing with their toys with us and know they have teeth and how to win the game! Tibbe still plays TOW that way - by working up the toy and trying to get my hand. He's got a soft mouth so he usually doesn't ever bite too hard. If he does, I tell him "No" and stare at him saying "No bad bite!" and, here's the cute part, he usually sends himself into self-imposed exile - walking slowly into the other room or into his crate! It's too cute! Tibbe is not big on returning the ball directly to me and will challenge me for it unless I tell him "Mommie throw it!" as he puts it down and he will almost always stand back to allow me to throw it as he loves to run to get it. He'll get it and bring it back to near me but not near enough I don't have to stretch out to get the ball and say my "Mommie throw it!" to keep him from trying to get it. He just can't bring himself to actually bring it to me and put it in my actual hand and unless I train him to do that, doubt he ever will, he's so competitive. I love that he's aggressive, playful and wants to challenge me during play!

Thanks.... I was just worried that this was something negative and needed to stop it, but maybe it's okay after all? She usually doesn't get my hand to hard. It will be interesting to see how she plays with the new pup at the end of the month! What hurts the worst is when she is playing/biting a toy and pushes the toy up against my leg. She is not trying to bite me, but sometimes gets my leg in the process of biting the toy. Now, that usually hurts, but never break the skin luckily.
