Default Are we prepared??

With the Hurricanes in the past. I was thinking how on earth would I evacuate easily in my 4 door sedan and 12 furbabies? I thought it would be a helpful to share emergency evacuation plans with eachother. I have a basic plan but would be willing to hear other good ideas.

I have 3 large carriers that I can put 4 furbabies in each. I have some canned food in my trunk and some bottled water. I also have a pack of pee pads. I think I'm gonna toss in some rolls of papertowels and a first aid kit.

What about incase of a fire in the house. How would you evacuate a multiple dog household? Put them all outside in carriers? What if you only have a little time to get them all out?

Scarey to think this can happen but it sure doesn't hurt to be prepared right?

You're right. We'd all like to think that it wouldn't happen to us but a plan must come into play.

I only have 2 adult yorkies and they sleep with me so in case of a fire, I've got an exit out of my bedroom that leads outside to part of the patio. Now with puppies, I'd have to go into the heat of it wherever that may be since the pups are in the kitchen in an x-pen.

Hurricanes are easier to plan for. I'd just load them up into carriers and we're off on a road trip.

What about tornadoes? For us, we would need to get to the lowest part of the house or bathtub. Holding on to a frightened dog would not be easy but a carrier wouldn't fit either...so, what do you do if you don't have a basement or storm shelter???

That is really something to think about! We have always drilled the kids on fire evacuation every Nov during fire prevention month. I have always made sure to tell them that they are responsible to get themselves out - nothing else - no pets - no nothin'. When I was a teen, a neighbor lost two young boys in a fire. One boy woke the father who got them out and went to a neighbor to call 911. When he came out the boys were gone. The mother had just come from work as a nurse and was racing door to door at 2am looking for the boys. The younger one went in for the dog, the older went in after him. The dog got out, but the boys died of smoke inhalation. Just a thought.

I also thought the same thing and also worry about fires which we have in Arizona so I set up an area in my garage right by the exit so I can load very quickly the following items for my 10 little ones. I have also discussed this with my pet sitter and have shown her where everything is so she can also move them in a hurry. I have purchased some duplicate things as I don't want to be digging through the house looking for these things.

Cages/fold down type
Xpen
First Aid Kit
Food
Water
Blankets
Leashes
Collar/harness with ID
Vets Name/Phone No.
Book with copies of medical records
Picture of each dog.
Paper Towels
Moist Wipes
Water/Food Bowls
Shampoo
I keep all of their meds in a cupboard and this should be the only thing I would have to run into the house for - I keep a ziplock bag by the meds.

This is a good thread Luckily I have two rabbits who stay in their cages when Im not watching them, and my Yorkie is always where I can see her. I guess I should keep her crate in a more easily accessible place.

Ive been wondering this for a while... what should go in to a first aid kit for doggies/kittys??

That is a great list! I do need to set up an emergency pack for the pups in my car and in the shed outside the house. I really appreciate you guys bringing this up, now that I have six babies - evacuation would really be a much bigger ordeal than in the past. I better get busy. I do like to be prepared.

OK this is weird you ask because I am always thinkign about stuff like that not only with the animals but kids!!!

I always say if a tornado or something happens i will go into the well pump area of my house. Strangely enough.. when my house was built they dug this little cave area into the basement and put doors on. Only about 4 1/2 ft. high and 4 ft. wide and about 6 ft. long. It houses my well pump and I swear I am squeezing everybody in for an emergency! I think weird and think that because it's placement that even if the house crashed down or was ripped apart it would be safe because it is situated fully underground just in front of the house with the entrance from the basement. I told my husband I wanted a small air tube thingy run up to ground level that could open and shut incase I needed air if the house caved in.

LOL.. I have to much time on my hands if I have nothing better to do then think up wacky plans like this

If you don't have a basement or storm shelter, you would go into your most INSIDE ROOM WITHOUT WINDOWS (walk-in closet, half bath with no window, etc). Stay down low. Don't stand in front of windows!

You have to "mentally" be prepared AHEAD of time and now what you should do in case of "what if ______ happens".
