| Yorkie Potty Inside and Outside??? Hello All, I have a 5 month old male. He was 1st trained to go potty on the wee wee pads, then I wanted him to also learn how to go outside potty. He is smart and goes on the wee wee pads inside, and also goes outside when I walk him. However, when he goes outside he plays a bit and wants to explore a lot so that is why it takes time for him to go. The last walk is about 10PM and sometimes he can hold it through the night and sometimes not (when I wake up at 5:30 AM he's already gone on the wee wee pad. Also, throughout the day he is constantly going on the wee wee pads (not sure about the timing though). Question - At what would they be able to hold it through the night until morning and stop having to go so much during the day? I was hoping that I would be able to walk up in the AM before work, and that he would only have to go like 1 to 2 times on the wee wee pads until I get home and walk him a 2nd time. My mom is home so he's not alone anyway. Any reply would be helpful. Thanks so much. |

| Cookie was able to hold it until morning consistently by about 7 months or so. From 3.5 months to 7 months she decreased from needing to be taken out in the middle of the night 90% of the time to maybe 20% of the time, and after 7 months it was pretty rare that she ever needed out at night (maybe 3-4 times a month or so, now down to once every couple of months at 16 months of age).

| He should be old enough to be okay overnight. If he has 2- 3 potty breaks while you are at work, that would be great. My boys are both pad and outdoor trained. My youngest was originally 100% outdoor trained, and I think he piddles often on the pad just because he can. He would be fine if we took the pads away. He does have the urge to pee when he is excited, so we would have to make trips outdoors every time the doorbell rang or we play fetch. When you do make the change to 100% outdoors, take the pads away completely. If the pads come and go, it will confuse your pup. Good luck!

| Thank you Maximo. My goal is to get him trained to use both (inside on pads and outdoors). I live in NYC in an apt and when it is bad weather outside like rainy, snowy, etc I would probably not take him out. So then, he would use the pad. If I lived in a house with a backyard it wouldn't be a problem to have him trained 100% outside. Thanks. |
