Gizmo very hyper at groomers.... So Gizmo was groomed on Saturday and the groomer said he was very hyper. She suggested that I take him for a long walk before his appt next time or give him some melatonin. That long walk is easy, at least you would think so. I have noticed after his walks he seems to be even more hyper. We walked for almost 90 minutes last night and when we got home he was running around with his toys as if he had just woken up!!!! He's like the engerizer bunny! I take him for a 20 minute walk in the morning and after dinner we walk about an hour. Any suggestions on calming him down and thoughts on melatonin? Now I'm worried he might get nipped if he doesn't calm down at the groomers.

Hmmm, honestly? I would look for another groomer and interview them first...no nothing formal but my Mia2 was hyper at the groomer too, the groomer nicely complained, so I decided to find another groomer that would work with her...never another complaint...I don't know anything about Melatonin for dogs. I know that many groomers do NOT want them sedated and that if you tell them you did they won't work on your pup. I'd just find a groomer who has more patience.

Other than walking, how about playing games like fetch? And I agree with Lynzy, I think you should look for another groomer. Not saying the groomer you went to is bad but I think you'd be better off finding one that has more paitence and knows how to deal with pups with a lot of energy.

I always use a mobile groomer that comes to my home, and that way it keeps him in his comfort zone, as well as me being able to check on him while he is being groomed. My Gizmo too is more hyper after a walk, so I wait to walk him till after he is groomed. I've seen so many horror stories about leaving their pups at the groomer for hours and having bad experiences, that I think I'm a little OCD about how he is groomed though :-)

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Please check with your vet prior to giving any type of supplement to your pup to make sure it's safe and the dosage is appropriate. I can find references to it being used as treatment for anxiety in some dogs, but it can have side effects. I had the same issue with Scarlett when it came to grooming. My best solution was hiring a mobile groomer so she's not sitting in a cage getting worked up when the groomer isn't working on her. Even though she's one of 5 dogs in my house, being caged around other dogs stresses her. Being the only one in the grooming van along with the faster completion time makes a huge difference for her. Good luck.

Or! You can learn to groom yourself. There are many here that does all the grooming at home, including myself.

Thank you for responses. This was Gizmo's third time with her. I know the first two times he was her first appt. I don't want to give him anything. She was very nice but I was still a little hurt, weird I know. I don't know if I want to give her another chance, although she is very good. Grooming him myself is not an option. He won't even sit still to be brushed so I can't imagine having a pair of scissors near him.
