| Questions about grooming Hi! I'm hoping someone can help me through a few grooming issues. First a little background... I have a 16 mos old yorkie who I have been taking to the groomers since she was very young. I've always had them keep her hair in a puppy cut, and think she looks really cute with it short. She's a bigger yorkie (9 1/2 lbs) and I think her hair is cottony, although it doesn't ever tangle. As you can see in the avatar her ears are floppy - also that pic shows about 3 weeks growth since her last grooming, typically we'd only have gone about another week, maybe 2. Anyway, I've been trying to grow her hair out. Partly because it's winter (even though she has tons of coats and a snowsuit) and partly because I think all these pics of yorkies with longer hair are so cute, I'd like to see how she looks. I've tried this two times before and gave up frustrated. Here's the problem. Now that it's beginning to grow, I brush her at least once a day, and bath her more frequently than when its really short, and she still looks a mess ALL THE TIME. Not a cute, tussled kind of mess, but a "doesn't anyone take care of you, you poor neglected doggie" kind of mess. At her longest (which I achieved for a very short time last summer), it wasn't any better. So my questions are: 1. In all these adorable pics posted on this site, did everyone just finish grooming right before snapping them? 2. When the hair finally gets longish, does it start to "keep its style" a little longer? 3. If I decide to stick it out, is there something special I should be asking her groomer to do, or should I just stay away from the groomer for awhile? (I can bath her and clip her nails) 4. How often is too often to giver her a bath? (she looks best the day of her bath) Currently she's getting one every week. I use a mild puppy shampoo that doesn't seem to be drying her skin. 5. Is there a shampoo that helps keep the hair looking nice longer? 6. What kind of brush, comb is best? I know this should be a simple, minor issue, but without some feedback, I'm afraid I'll end up at the groomers by the end of the week. Any input is greatly welcome! |

| I use Chries Christensen Day to Day shampoo conditioner and Ice on Ice spray conditioner. In between baths I use the Ice on Ice when I brush to get the hair to lay down more. It does seem to me to go more into a style the longer it gets. When I go to the groomers I tell them I am letting it grow out. She still cuts the ears and makes that hair fan out real pretty. She also does a hygene cut. You can find Chris Christensen product by looking up Chris Christensen on the internet. Alot of people on here use these products. Good luck I am letting my females hair grow out and it does get better.

| I can only tell you what I do, I'm not a groomer but do have 3 yorkies. 1. I bath them once a week -- I use Mane & Tail Shampoo 2. I use Cowboy Magic Conditioner 3. I use Cowboy Magic Detangler & Shine enhancer 4. I try a brush them each every day -- I use a massaging rubber brush, a natural boar bristle brush and a metal comb. Cowboy Magic Products can be purchased usually at a feed/farm store or www.cowboymagic.com The Mane & Tail is available at Walmart Hope this helps. |

| 1) Atleast in the majority of my pics I just finished brushing her, some arent though. 2) Ive had my Yorkies coat about 7-8 inches long before, and right now its probably 2ish. When its longer, it will stay parted and straight more. When short like this, its just all crazy, going every which way. 3) Ask the groomer to round the feet (keeps a neater appearance), do a sanitary trim, and tip the ears if you want. When I was growing my Yorkies coat out I used to trim a little bit off (1/4"-1/2") every once and a while, to even it up, as everything didnt grow evenly. 4) It depends on the dog, some go a week, others can go a month. You just have to keep an eye on the skin. I usually bathe every 2 weeks, but if shes been out in the mud/rain, its more like every week. 5) I think you need to experiment with shampoo/conditioner to see what works the best on your doggies coat. So do a search and see who uses what. 6) I use this brush: http://www.showdogstore.com/index.as...PROD&ProdID=43 Make sure the brush you are using doesnt have the plastic tips on the edge. I also use a metal toothed comb. I always make sure I use a grooming spray (i liked Eqyss's avocado spray) when brushing. I think the hardest part is growing out the topknot. Because until its able to go up, it just goes down in front of her eyes. Also when they get a longer beard, mine always likes to dip the whole beard in to the water then rub her face on my leg

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | I do my own grooming unless it's something major - like getting a puppy cut - I keep both my girls long and it's pretty easy IF you keep it up everyday. What I do is always use a great Shampoo - (CC Systems is what I've been using over a year now and love it)....and a finishing spray helps ALOT.... Of you like long hair the simple things should be kept up - Like the ears and their little butts...but you sound like you're doing really well so far... On pictures - I post all kinds ...but my favorites of my girls are usually when they're well groomed and of course they look their best after a bath...but you can keep that look going if you try to just do the basics everyday... |

| Thanks so much for all the help! I'll be giving some kind of finishing spray a try, we haven't done that yet, and it seems like the CC products are pretty popular! I may also continue giving her a weekly bath, her skin seems healthy, and she looks so much better! |
