| Rescued little Yorkie-girl Hi Everybody - This is my first time writing. I rescued a little 5 year old from a breeder, and had her spayed. She actually has wonderful training. She does everything on a newspaper. But that means that although she sees my other little rescue doggy do her thing outside, this little girl, mainly do it on the newspaper - not a bad thing when travelling, but how can I get her to do everything OUTSIDE only? There is always a doggy-door open, but she'll come in from being outside, and then still prefer to do it on the newspaper. Ag shame! She is such a delight, and so faithful in doing it on the newspapers (which I keep in the same area every day) - but I must keep it clean daily, and when visitors come, I need to rush and hide it away outside etc. Can she be "re-programmed"? Kind regards, Hentie. |

| Slowly move the paper closer to the door, then put the paper outside and see if that works. Make sure to have treats to praise her if she does the right thing then slowly make the paper smaller and then remove it all together.

| Bobbib Good morning. I just had to say that what you've been told about pee pad training your fur baby and going outside to pee-pee is hard to believe. I am sure they can do both if trained to do so. I trained Snickers to use the pee pad (which she does faithfully) but when we are outside walking or traveling in the car she will tell me (whine) it's time and relieve herself outside with no problem. Good luck. |

| Welcome to yorkietalk! This is great advice. My girls are all pee pad trained and do well. When we took When I was training Lollie for show, I worked with teaching her to potty on a lead. It didn't take her long to figure it out. Dogs are smarter than we give them credit. They can learn to use either/or. |

| We trained Gracie to puppy pads when she was young. Later I taught her to go outside by taking her for walks. I never leave her outside alone and we don't have a doggy door. You can teach her to go outside but it is going to take some effort on your part. Take her outside when you think she may need to go potty and take the newspaper out with you. Stand there with her and say something like "go potty" or whatever phrase you think will be easy for her to pick up on. It's pretty much just like what you would do to train a puppy. Once she learns to potty on the paper outside you can slowly take the paper away. We have kept the puppy pads for when we have to be away for a few hours and for when we have bad weather. I think they are a wonderful convenience for a small dog owner. |

| My Gizmo does both as well. Maybe take them both for walks together. That's how I trained Gizmo to go outside, I walked him with my daughters little dog dash. Once he seen dash go on a walk, he did the same. Now he almost refuses to use the pads, unless he can't go for a walk, like right now his leg is hurt, so he has no choice but to use the pad. He preferes now though to go outside and will hold It till he goes for his walks, but he did start out on pads only, so yes they can be retrained, definitely :-) |

| First off, welcome to you and your little girl. What is her name. Would love to meet her too. My girls were all pad trained while babies and in their expen that I attached to a wire crate. Even though I took them outside about every hour or two, I still had a pee pee pad down so that they would not get use to making a potty on the floor in case they needed to go when I was busy or running errands. They are now 9 & 8 years old and boy am I happy that they are pad and outside trained. Saves getting them out on rainy days, traveling, going into motels and not wanting to go outside at night or early morning in strange areas or bad weather. We do take disposable pads when traveling, but use quilted cloth pads with waterproof backing at home. Putting the pad down inside the expen was also perfect when two of them had knee surgery and were convalescing. It's all up to each person what works best for them.

| My girl does both. I like her using the pads when it is raining and also in the middle of the night when she has to go she just takes her stairs down from the bed goes potty and comes back to bed.. It sure does make things easier. |

YT Addict | If you train them to potty on command they will go wherever they are told which is great for travel. I did ppad first then outside no problem. When its raining they use ppads inside or on outside on porch under overhang. |

| When I had puppies I was a working gal. I trained them to pee pee on the paper, when they were 100% paper trained (usually they were at 5 months old) I then started to house break them. Every morning at 7:30am, rain, snow, sleet, 7:30am was their walk time. I would get home from work at 4:30, leash them up for their walk. On these walks I would tell them to pee pee and poo poo, these were the words I used and they knew what they were. You have to be consistant with the walk time, no matter what the weather is. It took 2 months of leash walking and they were 100% house broken at the ages of 7 months old. If you are retired or a SAHM, it works the same way. To house break, time is the utmost important, it MUST be the same time every day, regardless of the weather. Your dog CAN BE retrained, you have to put the time in. I would not leave wee wee pads down at all. Take him out every 2 hours if you have to. When he makes praise, praise, praise and give a treat. when he gets the idea making outside is a good thing you can cut the time to every 3 hours, then 4 hours and so on. It can be done, it's the time factor, the same time everyday until he knows what he's expected to do.

| Mine do both, it took awhile as they are pee pad trained. Both suits our situation. I taught them to go outside, by putting their used paper outside. ..and by putting their poop in the place I wanted them to go. Praising them as if they were Olympic winners, when they go outside.
