| Introducing dog to new baby? Hi everyone! It's been a while since I've been on YT but I need some advice. DH and I are expecting our first (human) child in November. Our 3 year old Yorkie/Silky mix, Buster, can get very hyper and protective of me and DH at times (does not like certain people or other animals, especially large breed dogs) and people keep asking me what I am going to do with him when the baby comes. Honestly, it ticks me off because Buster is my first baby and the thought of re-homing him for any reason is unfathomable to me. So I tell them that it will be an adjustment for him too and I plan on working with him and teaching him right and wrong when it comes to the baby. I was wondering if you guys could share some advice/experiences on introducing your furbabies to your human babies. I think I'm worrying for nothing and that Buster will be curious about the new baby at first but ultimately acclimate to him, but I want all the advice/tips I can get so the transition can work for everyone! Thanks so much!

| I can only tell you what has happened with or new grandbaby but hope it will ease your mind. The first time she was around our two we let them sit beside us and smell her and look at her while we held her. After a few times of this they have adjusted quite well. Congrats on your new baby. Praying all works out well for you all.

| Start getting Buster used to sights and sounds associated with a baby. Get the baby gear all set up, swing the swing, play the music, open and close the diaper pail, etc. on a regular basis. If you have any access to crying babies, let Buster hear that sound! Decide right now how much access you want Buster to have to the baby's room- if you don't want him in there get him used to that NOW. Once you have the baby have DH bring a blanket home from the hospital that Baby was wrapped in. Let Buster get used to the smell while being loved and treated, he'll associate that smell with good things. Once you bring Baby home, have Buster meet baby outside. Let Buster sniff the new arrival before you bring Baby in the house and make sure Buster gets lots of treats and praise for good behavior around Baby. Never force the interactions between Baby and Buster, let them happen on their own but always supervise. Let Buster be part of the action when Baby comes home- let him sit quietly next to you as you feed the baby. Let him be on the floor during Baby's tummy time. Make sure you teach Buster that Baby's toys are NOT also Buster toys, and teach Baby that Buster's toys are not Baby's. Let them both have their own "safe" places, don't leave them alone unsupervised, and teach Baby early on not to grab and pull hair. Best of luck with your pregnancy!!!! |
