| When should I spay? Hi, I don't post too much on here, but I browse the forum frequently. I have a 7 month pup that I am going to get spayed. My question is when should I do it? I have researched a lot and have read that waiting until after the first heat has benefits, but also before their first heat is recommended. We have one other female yorkie who is spayed and Gracie (7 month pup) is never let out of my sight outside of the house. What's your opinion, is it better to wait until after her first heat or go ahead and get her spayed before her first heat? She is about 5.5 lbs right now. Thanks!

| I spayed at 5-6 months old. The latest YT debate is growth places and hormone.....blah blah blah. But you also have to take into consideration the size of the dog. Smaller animals bones close earlier than larger animals. I have no issues with Pebbles and she was spayed at 5 months old and is now 7 yrs old. Because of the fact that she was spayed prior to her first heat her risk is 0.5%, those spayed after one estrous cycle have 8.0% of the risk, and dogs spayed after two estrous cycles have 26.0% of the risk of developing mammary neoplasia later in life. Overall, unspayed female dogs have a seven times greater risk of developing mammary neoplasia than do those that are spayed. Personally, I feel very comfortable having spayed young. Also there is the retained puppy teeth issue that many Yorkies have that need to be removed. This is usually done during a spay/neuter since they will be under anesthesia anyway. Of course, be sure to do preop blood works.

| As far as I am concerned spaying before her first heat is the way to go it takes the chance of mammary below 1% but after the first heat the raises every heat. I would spay now just make sure to get the before surgery blood work. I'm not really sure of any benefits to waiting until after there first heat.

| Most females go into heat about 6 or 7 months old, my vet advises spay before first heart. My females were spayed at 6 months, before first heat cycle. Best to check with your vet.

| 2 of my girls were spayed at 6 mos, there have been no problems. One of the girls was 4lbs when she was spayed,no problems. My other little girl will be spayed just before she turns 7mos,due to scheduling. |

There are more than a few studies that show mammary cancer incidence does increase after each heat, the % increases can vary all over the place, but suffice to say there is some increase. Although again we don't know if the studies done can be applied across the board for all breeds of dogs. Pyrometra is very rare in young intact females. IMO I don't think waiting one heat then spay after is a huge risk. The details of when to spay your particular dog should be discussed in depth with your vet. So that they can advise you, on your particular dog and situation. For most pet owners I feel that judicious timing of the spay for the breed of dog you own, is usually the best decision.

| I prefer to wait until after the first heat. That minimizes that later risks, but it allows time for the growth plates to close and for puppy teeth to mostly fall out. I think a year old is what I'd prefer after reading a vast number of articles relating to early spay-neuter.
