| Transition from crate to bed Lexi is now a little over 5 months old and I am thinking about letting her start sleeping in our bed at night. She has always slept in her crate and sleeps great. In bed between 8-9 and sleeps until I get up between 7-7:30. I am a little hesitant for a couple reasons. 1. She currently goes crazy when in my bed. One night when she fell asleep next to me in the living room I tried bringing her into my room and as soon as she got on the bed she started digging and biting at my sheets and just running around like crazy. 2. I am worried she wont sleep as well. Being in the crate she knows she has to stay there until I get her out, but being on the bed she has the freedom to get up when she wants. Part of me thinks just continue with the crate and not mess with something that is already going well, but I would also like to have her sleep in the bed with us. Has anyone else had experience transitioning from crate to bed with their pup, any advice would be appreciated! |

YT Addict | If she likes her crate I say don't change it. You both will sleep better and she will be safer. I don't know how small she is but she can roll off or you can roll over her. I have a larger one who sleeps with us and he fine but he is 14 lbs right now. My smaller one I have crate trained and sleeps on the night stand beside my bedside. I do it that way to keep him safe because of his size. |

| My Willow is 3 1/2 months old now and I tried a couple of times and I agree with you, she is just too crazy to sleep with She is happy in her crate and like your pup she goes to bed without any issues so I have decided to just let her be.

| Thanks. I am also worried if I try the bed out for a few days and decide it's not going to work, she might not be too happy going back to her crate. Might just stick with the crate for now. |

| I would just transition to an open crate if she is fully potty trained and there is nothing that she can get hurt on. Callie has always slept in a crate I just leave it open now and we both like having our own space to sleep.

| I think it just depends on the pup, it all kind of works out naturally!

| Both my girls sleep in our bed. Rosie is about 6 lb and Mikki is 4 lb. we have never had any problems with them sleeping in our bed. Both slept in bed with us from day one but my girls were 6 months and a year when we got them. Neither were crate trained. I think Taylor had a good idea. Maybe start with an open crate and then see if she can transition to your bed. Maybe someone worth experience can give additional advice.

| I always crate train my dogs and find that you will have the best sleep without your pet(s). My dogs love their "dens" and run to them whenever it is time for them to be crated. Of course, they get a small treat to which they look forward. We do not let dogs have run of house, so anytime we are not home or at nite, they go into their dens. We attached an x-pen and took off the doors so they have extra room to stretch. We call it their condo! After one experience, I vowed never again. Casey would sleep fine but he'd get off the bed and bark at me until he was fed - it kept getting earlier and earlier. Casey did not know the difference between work days and weekend days. Sounds like your present situation is working! |

Thanks for the advise. I think I am going to stick with the crate at night. I will sometimes here her up early in the morning, but she will just stay in her crate quietly or go back to sleep until I get up. I have a good feeling she would be getting me up early if she slept in my bed, and I'm not a morning person Lexi doesn't really go into her crate willingly at night, but she doesn't cry or whine when in there so it seems to work well for us. I put her crate in the living room during the day and she will sometimes go in there to play and dig, so she doesn't "hate" her crate. I think using the crate from the very beginning really helped with that. She knows that is where she sleeps at night, and doesn't know any different. | |

| Do you treat her each time she goes into crate? My dogs get exited just for a morsel of their kibble! You r fortunate that she does not whine or fuss - that's half the battle. |

| I used to in the beginning, but I stopped because it didn't seem to temp her to go in Street the first few times. Maybe I will will start that again. I sometimes have to crate her during the day for just short amounts of time, and she sometimes will whine then. Luckily she only whined/barked the first couple nights in the crate, but I was really good about not giving into her. I think I can thank doing the "cry it out method" to get my son to fall asleep on his own. If I can handle my son screaming crying for an hour straight, a little dog barking or whining is nothing! |
