| Grooming time: Best sheers/supplies and best videos on grooming by yourself? I waited until Chloe's hair got long enough so that I can trim it.. anddd.. well, it's long enough now, lol. Her body hair is almost at the floor now and her ears are REALLY hairy. Her legs also tangle A LOT and her belly hair has become tangled. It's time for a full grooming. I just want to know what everyone is using as a full grooming supplies set.. what do I need beside a good pair of sheers? Also, do most yorkies get their belly shaved? It seems it will be hard/painful to detangle her belly. For the legs, are you suppose to shave under the "armpit?" I feel that this is where Chloe tangles a lot. Also, ears.. do I need to shave the inside? I was thinking to start grooming on a regular table.. is an actual grooming table necessary? Thank you!

| I bought $10 shears from Sally Beauty, I think the brand is Eclipse. You should get thinning shears too, they're great for hiding mistakes and blending the tan and black. I cut her belly and arm pits very short with scissors, I don't have clippers. I groom Lola on my dining room table on a towel, you don't really need a proper grooming table. |

| Get a pair of Andis clippers. Also, do not use scissors on the armpits, that can be very dangerous. If you have to get the mats out of the pits, you can use mustache trimmers. Those will work well for the ears also.

| Is this Chloe's first time getting groomed? If so, I think it'd be good to have someone to help you. For the table, if you're going to use a dining size table, I found it helps to limit the space so they won't roam around. It's also good to have something with traction so surface won't be slippy to them. I've always given my two summer cuts (puppy cut). I shave their belly area with the clipper as well. Armpits, I actually use scissors. I grab their front paws and make them stand on their hind legs which exposes their armpits. I bought a cheap clipper from walmart. Works fine for me... Got the shear/thinner from Amazon. I think somewhere around $15 for them. |

| I wanted to add It's a good idea to do all of her brushing on a table, it helps them learn to stand still when you need to cut their hair. When I cut Lola's armpits I have her stand and I gently pull her leg forward and out a little bit so I can get under there and see what I'm doing. I don't cut the hair down to the skin because I'm afraid of cutting her. This is a good link for cutting yorkie legs Pet Grooming: The Good, The Bad, & The Furry: Scissoring a Yorkie |

Please, if you are going to groom your own dog (and there is no reason you cannot learn from YouTube) do not use scissors in these areas....

YT Addict | I have Andis clippers that are cordless and rechargeable which works great for yorkies. I also have a palm trimmer for the pads of the feet, poop slide, underbelly, armpits and ears. You an get grooming videos on You Tube for free. I usually beak up the trimming and do all the small stuff one week then the trimming another week. I bathe first then dry and trim small stuff. Then the next week I will trim/cut bid stuff he bathe and dry. The cordless shears are more silent and easier to use (less vibration). Last edited by valeriejsmyth; 06-03-2014 at 03:05 PM. |

| Wylie's mom, I just looked in the grooming section, I didn't notice it was there before. The pdf book that was there was really helpful. So far, I've trimmed her belly while she was sleeping with baby scissors (the ends are not sharp, they have rounded protected ends) and all the matts are gone there. I've also detangled her whole body. Now it's bath time for now until I get all the supplies. It looks like Andi's is the top pick here. I want to keep the show dog coat so I think all I will really need is a little light trimming for now, especially for a first time. I did a butt area trim very carefully too so everything is nice and clean now Thank you, everyone!
