| Training an adult yorkie to pads? How difficult is it to train an adult yorkie to use potty pads? Does having another yorkie in the house that is already pad trained help? There's a yorkie in my local animal shelter that they say is 2-3 years old. She appears to look a lot like my ZoE although it seems that her ears, while up are more bat-like. Unfortunately I have to work tomorrow, so my Mum offered to go look at her for me. My biggest concern, other than how she'd get along with ZoE, is the potty pad issue. With my erratic schedule I need my pup to be potty trained, so I don't HAVE to be home at a specific time. I figured with all the rescue people on here someone has to have experience taking in an adult and pad training him/her. Any advice is appreciated

| A prospect -- very exciting!! I trained Teddy to pads when he was 8 months old. He had been 100% outdoor trained. Following Max's lead helped. Teddy took to peeing on the pads right away. Pooping was another story. He really did not want to do that in the house. I had to pen him when he was desperate to go. I felt cruel because he really wanted to go outside to do it 'right.' After he finally went on the pad, I jumped up and down praising him and gave him a big treat. After that, he was fine.

| I've had 2 that I've trained as adults. Teena was 2 & completely untrained: she caught on like a puppy. Roxie was trained to go outdoors & the poor thing would "hold it" for 24 hours if I didn't let her outdoors. That was a bigger challenge, but in both cases I think it helped greatly that I had Dolly using the pads religiously. And of course the praise!!!! Good luck!

Roxie and Teddy sound alike -- although he never made it as long as 24 hours. I broke down and took him outside the first couple of weeks.

She's the first yorkie I've ever heard of at our local shelter, so there might be a lot of interest in her. I really wish I could be there myself to see her. My Mum isn't much of an animal person at all, although she adores ZoE. But her Mum, my Nan, raised yorkies, and all of her siblings had yorkies, so my mum is very familiar with them. One of my best friends volunteers at the shelter and said if She isnt rehomed by the third day, she will be pulled by a local small dog rescue, as the shelter she's at has one of the highest kill rates in the state

| My Sapphire was totally clueless. It was so bad I finally rewarded her for peeing on the rug so she would understand what I meant when I said go pee! In reality I figured if it backfired on me it couldn't get any worst as she peed on the rug all the time anyway. Well that's all it took and she peed on the pad, finally after 2 months (and she was a sneak peer) and I praised the heck out of her. I think I even cried I was so happy. She also was a poo walker, and would get MOST of it on the pad, most of the time. I got her at 2 years of age, and it took a bit but she is now 100% reliable on using pee pads. WooHoo! So yes, it can be done, and I don't think it's much harder than training a young puppy.

| I didn't get her. My Mum was there waiting at 9:30 for the doors to open at 10am, but there were people in line before her and some woman a few before my Mum was there to see the yorkie and took her. That was my Mums first experience at animal control, and she said it's her last. She was completely disgusted by the fact that they sell these dogs to just anyone. No vet references needed, no fenced yard...nothing. And many of the animals aren't fixed, so you can just go buy an unaltered dog cheap ($50 -$150) and breed it to your hearts content. So sad and so wrong.

| I got to 2 older dogs who didn't have any issues getting used to only peeing on pads. They used to have an area to pee, apart from their resting area, but washable pads have made cleaning their space a lot easier. I wish we would have gotten them earlier. |

Our animal control is a mess. People will buy "desirable" dogs there cheap and then turn around and flip them on online sites, as though they are rehoming their pet, to make money.

I understand your mom's reaction to the situation at animal control. Heartbreaking! Pet flipping -- ugh! Can't believe this has become a thing.
