| Ticks... My Yorkie Got a Tick and Vet Put on Activyl Hi, Please ADVISE. My Yorkie sometimes goes for a playdate with my mom's Yorkie [because they are sisters]. They only play inside. I keep my Yorkie strickly inside and she goes on wee wee pads. The only time I take her out is when I go to the shopping center which is all concrete [no grass]. My mom lets her dog run through the grass [but has used frontline on her dog]. Because of my yorkie's skin allergies I did not put the frontline on her. The day after one of her visits with her sister, I saw a tick on her neck. The tick was the size of a large sesame seed, brown with a white circle near it's neck and in the circle is another brown dot. I ran to the vet , who removed the tick, told me it was a deer tick and then applied a solution called Activyl to my dogs back... It appear like he applied the whole thing as he put it down her back. I then brought her home. Later I found out the side effects of this solution. It says that it is fatal to cats and if you groom a recently treated dog, it can cause tremors /uncoordinated muscle movements. I am really upset because 1) I don't know if the dog contracted lymes [or if I have it because she sleeps with me] and 2) if this solution will effect her delicate health. The vet never told me what the side effects were and just put it on the dog... He was trying to be helpful. Can someone give me some advice as to what to do ? I was so careful not to let my dog go in the grassy areas and to keep her mostly indoors. The vet said she got the tick because she had to go in the grass at some point [and I know she did not!!] or mice brought it into my house [the latter he said is remote]. I need advice on all this... what do you use for tick prevention and do you think she can get a tick on concrete at a shopping center? How could she get a tick from my mom's dog if my mom's dog has been treated with frontline? thanks again to all .. |

| My dogs do go outside, in my yard and the dog park and I use Parastar, monthly. Bubba just had a tick. It was a deer tick and after being out walking, I have had ticks on me. Since your moms dog has been frontlined the tick may have come into the house on that dog and jumped off. Ticks can be found almost anywhere animals have roamed. The tick you have discribed doesn't sound like a deer tick to me. It sounds like a female Lone Star Tick. As for Lyme disease the tick would have had to be on your dog for more than 24hrs. Watch for the "bullseye" rash and symptoms of Lyme. It can also be picked up in blood work but not immediately. As for Activyl, I have no experience with that and hope someone who has will pop in shortly.

| Tommy also had a tick, the ticks are really bad this year in PA. He was on frontline even thought I try I keep him from wooded areas. Now the vet gave us a chewable net guard which would might work for your baby. The vet also put him on a anabiotic right away. It cause his stomach to get sick which also lead us to find out he has a problem in his liver. So the tick costs me about $3,000 in hospital and vet bills but also found a problem that now hopefully we are fixing with his liver. So it been a long two months since the tick but in a way I'm glad he got it. |

| Thanks a lot thanks to all !!! Wow... I am glad I am not alone with this Tick problem. My vet said I cannot test my dog for 1 to 2 months because lyme does not show up right away. He did not give me any precautionary meds ... he just put on the activyl. I am in the process today of washing her beds. If someone knows anything about activyl please let me know and whether I should continue to use it even if I keep my dog inside most of the time. thanks. |

| Jackson's had many many ticks over the years. It's a very normal occurrence along much of the East Coast. No reason to keep your dogs inside 24/7 or worry about one little tick. Let them be dogs and live a normal life. Jackson would hate life if he couldn't run around in the grass, play fetch, go swimming, visit the beach, etc... Ticks suck and are gross but you just gotta deal. The tick could've come off you for all you know. I've found a tick on me after walking through long grass. We visited a battlefield last year and I had 20 ticks crawling all over me!! Eekkk it was gross. I was picking them off Jackson for a few days. I did not wash any of his bedding right away or anything, they are not like fleas and don't muliptly. Mosquitoes and bugs can also get into houses which is why monthly heartworm meds are so important even if you have an indoor pet. I use K9 Advantix for fleas/ticks during the summer months when ticks are bad, but don't find any need for it during the fall and winter. But I give Heartguard Plus for heartworms all year long.

| Like Brit and Margaritaville, I have had ticks on me. I have carried them in the house and they have ended up on the dogs. I watched one fall off of me onto Teddy when I bent down to pet him. In 5 years, I have pulled at least 15 ticks off of my Yorkies. I know you want to protect your little girl and keep her healthy. This does not mean you need to be afraid of the outdoors. Sunshine is essential to health. Mental stimulation is essential to health.

| You live in New York. It is tick infested. This summer will be another bad tick and flea season. Unfortunately, a lot of veterinarians are seeing breakthroughs with frontline. There are several new excellent products including Activyl. With any medications it is important to monitor for side effects. These are chemicals that can cross the blood-brain barrier causing side effects. People can carry ticks into there homes. Most medications really don't repel ticks they need to bite to die. Your dog does not need medication now and needs to build antigen-antibody response to test positive on a 4DX Snap test. There are also test like the C6 and Cornell's Multiplex test to help decide if there is active infection. There is some debate over the accuracy of these tests within the veterinary community. If she does not react to that medication it probably safe to say she will not react in the future. It would be good to keep your dog on a flea and tick preventative during the warm months. Unfortunately, I have seen Lyme disease causing some severe symptoms, but most dogs just test positive on the Snap 4Dx test with no symptoms. Veterinarians preemptively treat with doxycycline because they want cover their bases, but it made to resistance down the road. |
