| Shivering.... My 18 month old, had 2 tick, we took him to the vet, & he gave us an Antibiotic just in case....(NO more Ticks found) after a day, the poor dog, wasn't himself, no barking, not eating, start a fever & shakiness / shivering in his 2 rear legs. We stopped the Antibiotic, as per the vet....less shivering, but not 100% Any advice ? |

| I would say it is a reaction to the antibiotic. My son almost lost his dog because of a reaction to antibiotic that brought on just such symptoms that eventually led to seizures. Unless it was a deer tick there is no chance of Lyme disease. Did you take the tick to the vet to have it looked at? Always make sure you use a tick remover to pull a tick out. You are more likely to get the head that way. Leaving the head in can cause a skin infection. Tick pullers are usually available at the vet's as well as at pet stores and department store pet supply areas. Sometimes vets have a difficult time calculating doses for small dogs. I hope your vet has a lot of experience with smaller breeds. It certainly helps when you have a situation like this. If you feel he needs another antibiotic make sure they use something else and watch closely for side effects. It's good you caught the symptoms as quickly as you did. It will take a couple of days for all the symptoms to resolve. Please don't give him anymore of whatever they first gave him. Last edited by gracielove; 05-14-2014 at 04:13 AM. | Vets are very capable of calculating doses in even the smallest animals so beware of some people's advice on here. Any dog can have a reaction to any medication. Something similar happened to my dog which was not well described in vet formularies and not seen before by his vets. There are many antibiotics to choose from and your vet needs to be notified immediatley of the continued symptoms. Good luck.

There are plenty of good vets out there that can do a good job but to blindly trust just anyone who is a vet is just stupid! | |

| It sounds like a reaction to the antibiotic to me as well. Finding 2 ticks are not enough to drain blood to the point of anemia so I cannot believe this could be an issue. Since your vet is aware of the situation and has instructed you to stop the drug just keep an eye on him the next day or so. Good luck

| Your vet said to stop the antibiotic and you did....if the symptoms are worse or not improving, I would simply call the vet. Not exactly sure what dosing has to do with this; but let me just say that vets can do math and can calculate dosages for all size animals. Vets, just like human doctors, are educated in pharmacology. Sure, mistakes can always happen; but to assume that vets cannot do math is insulting imho.

| I forgot to ask in my last post......did you vet suggest using a preventative Tick medication for the future? This will help in the future and to keep your little one safe from being exposed to ticks and the diseases they might carry.

| I'll add that the bigger problem these days isn't with Lyme it's anaplasmosis. Please listen to your vet on this not Internet people who are caught up in being angry at vets for not agreeing with their weird natural gobbly gook.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Could be a reaction to the vaccine - I'd call your vet asap. Also could be Lymes - was it a deer tick?

| Did I miss that the dog was also vaccinated? I thought it was just an antibiotic and 2 ticks found.

| I think since your pup is improving since being off the antibiotic is a good sign; but it probably is a good idea to contact him/her to get an opinion on it. If this was an allergic reaction to the antibiotic, sometimes it takes time for the allergic response to stop. Always best to err on the side of caution....
