| Can't use How to Train book yet...what now? I read the book...a couple times actually, but the book says I shouldn't start the schedule until 16 weeks. So what do I do in the meantime? He's not on a feeding schedule because he free feeds as suggested by the breeder and the vet. I also work full time but come home for lunch. My kids are home around 3:30. Can anyone suggest a schedule that might work for us. |

| Which method of potty training is this book for? Training should start right away. I strongly disagree with waiting until 16 weeks. I brought Max home at 13 weeks and he was already pad trained by his breeder. If you are thinking about crate training, 3 - 4 hrs without a potty break for a small puppy is too long during the day.

| The book covers all ways of training, house breaking, paper training and litter training. It said you can start before 16 weeks but not to expect results because they don't have much control. My puppy has been using the pads since I brought him home on Saturday. I don't want him to be solely pad trained though. During the day he isn't crated, he has an ex-pen |

Taylor, I think the only time it is confusing is when methods keep changing. It is definitely possible to pad train, and then 100% outdoor train. It is also to possible to do the reverse -- as I did with Teddy. He was 100% outdoor trained when I brought him home at 8 months. I re-trained to him to also use the pads.

| Wanted to add . . . . while I agree with the book about not having really high expectations for a puppy relative to potty training (especially for non-pad methods) . . . puppies tend to learn things faster in general. I regret that I did not start obedience/trick training earlier. Max knew sit right away, but I didn't work on anything else. I am a terrible trick trainer. In short, start training now and have fun with it!
