Yorkie Lover Donating Member | I agree...my girls don't know any strangers...they love it when visitors come to the house no matter who it is. I don't think I would consider them "guard dogs" at all.

toby was protective about a month after we got him (so thtat woulda made him 4 months old), but we stamped that behavior out REALLY quick. It got so bad that if someone WALKED BY the car we were sitting in he wouuld go nuts and think they were after me. He went after my fiance once as well at this age.... well.... now he welcomes everyone as a long lost friend.... even "smiles"

Jolene came into our family at about 9 months of age, as a rescue, with a previously broken jaw and two ribs by former owner. Lived initially with my parents until a few months ago when after begging and pleading I got to have her as my own. They were gone a lot and someone is home 24/7 around my house so it was better for her as she has separation anxiety. Anyway, she became protective of my parents about a month after getting there, once she felt safe. We've tried everything to calm her down. Now she is OK as long as my husband is home or nearby if we are out. Let me be alone and a man approach and it's all teeth, bark, and growl, with a wagging tail however. She is OK with women, just not men. She will even bark at the hubby when he comes home from work if he doesn't greet her at the door!! I never have to worry about someone coming in without her letting us know. Jen and Jolene

Tigger is now seven months and I want to say it started at six months, maybe before that even. He's a good little watch dog. Usually he is all giddy and such to see strangers and stuff, but get near "HIs property and Die!!!" He doesn't bare teeth or anything, just barks his head off. Even at night, If he hears any sound He goes nuts. (I think it took him so long, because I work eight to sometimes eleven hour shifts, and my boyfriend puts in a good eleven hour days everyday except weekends. So he spends most of the day to himself.) We were letting him roam the house freely and that's when it began, but then he tore up mommy's centerpiece and got into shredding things so now he stays baby gated in the kitchen. We love it and actually encourage it, because we don't live in the best of neighborhoods and have heard horror stories of what has gone on over here. We've lived here for six months now and haven't witnessed anything, but I still feel protected by my little four pound attack dog. It was funny because one night my boyfriend had to work really late (three A.M.) and when he came home Tigger didn't know who it was and woke me up barking like the world just came to an end. Man was he happy to find out that it was daddy.

Hmmmmmm, my dogs were born protective and that is why we call them "Watchdogs!" Yep, they would watch a burgular break in, watch him carry all of my millions in jewelry right out the door. YES! They certainly are WATCHDOGS! LOL

I'm pretty sure that mine will "never" be protective of his family. He's too laid back and friendly. If anyone gets near me - stranger or not - he just wants to play with them. Carol Jean
