| 9 week old Yorkie-poo Hello All, We are getting out little baby 9 week old Yorkie-poo this weekend. I have a few questions that hopefully some of you can help me with. I leave to work at 7am and don't get home until 5pm. Will she be ok for that amount of time. I will leave her in a space about 4 feet by 4 feet with food, water, a wee wee pad, and her bed (and the radio on). Is 9 weeks to young to get her? Any advise for my new baby? Thanks |

| The recommended age is 12 weeks. Even at 12 weeks, you have to remember that young puppies are very sensitive to stress. Taking a puppy (dog) to it's new home is very stressful at any age. If you add to that, long hours of no interaction, that is an unimaginable amount of stress to a puppy that has always had security in the form of socialization from it's litter/momma. Especially all at one time. So you can start to see how young puppies are then subjected to illnesses and behavior issues brought on by stress, especially a tiny 9 week old, but this can happen at any age when their level of stress is elevated. In my opinion, this is not the way to bring in a new puppy to a home when they are most delicate. It's almost impossible to do any kind of potty training if they have to start off this way.

| This is just my thinking. Not a pro but I have had dogs/puppies all my life and I am a senior citizen if your puppy is eating well, bright eyed and appears healthy then it is fine. As far as leaving the puppy, you have to do what is good for you. It would be nice if someone could look in on it at least 1 time during the day but if that is all you can do so be it. Not every dog owner can stay at home with it. Wishing you the best of luck. |

| Thanks Thanks for your input, it definitely gives me something to think about. Has any one taken their baby home at 9 weeks? I would love to hear any stories? |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Is there someone who can check on her during the day? At 9 weeks, she really is too young to be left alone for 10 hour stretches. Besides being frightening for her (imagine going from being surrounded by your mom and litter mates to isolation), there is also a real risk of hypoglycemia in these younger, smaller puppies. If you are lucky, she will eat when she's alone. But some of the younger dogs just won't eat and need to be encouraged to take something every couple of hours to prevent hypoglycemia, seizures and death.

| I took my yorkis, Max home at 9 weeks. He has been doing great. I did not about the 12 week thing. Call it dumb luck I guess. I do agree that it will be hard to potty train. I am having the worse time with ,Max and I am home with him |

I don't agree with the 9 week bring home, but I will say, you being there with him gives him a HUGE advantage over the OP who will be away for 10 hours of the day. I just want to be sure she understands the difference when comparing scenarios. Your Max is adorable.

| Its an awfully long time to leave a pup of that age alone. I certainly wouldn't. Is there someone that could look after the pup while you are away. I don't think it would be safe to leave it that long. Shirl |

| In the UK it is common practice for pups to leave their mums at 8 weeks, but I certainly would not leave a young pup alone for hours on end. |
