| You guys are scaring me!!! I'm going to be a first time dog owner in two weeks and after reading all of these posts I'm scared. Sooooo many health problems! I always imagined having a dog would be like having another child and I was prepared for that but my four kids don't even go through all the stuff I'm reading. Not second guessing my decision just praying for a healthy puppy. Is this normal to feel this way???? |

| It's perfectly normal to be nervous, but don't let it keep you from enjoying your puppy. Bring your puppy to the vet for a wellness exam, establish a relationship with your vet's office, feed a regular diet and exercise reasonable precautions. It is a good idea to look into health insurance or to keep a credit line/savings account open in case of emergency. Best wishes and congratulations!

| Buying your pup from a truly reputable breeder that does genetic testing and who breeds only the finest stock will save you a lot of pain and heartache later on. You don't have to want a show dog in order to get a good pet. The better breeders that study the bloodlines of the dogs they breed always have pet stock to sell. |

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | Hello and to YT. "Yorkies For Dummies" is the first one I recommend."Yorkshire Terriers: A Smart Owners Guide" is the second book. These are excellent resource books. And we have a great amount of info here.

| Honestly I think what happens is so many people come looking online when their dogs are having problems, and post questions, etc. Nobody necessarily joins a forum to say 'HI I HAVE A HEALTHY DOG!!" lol... so you're going to see more health problems than not. I wouldn't stress about it!

| I have 2 old labradors and a Golden so I was shocked when I found out that their respective breeds are labeled as ticking bombs of cancer in most of the dog forums. I agree with Britster's post. One of the reasons you may think these health issues are common is because minorities are generally pretty vocal. That being said, it's better to always keep a close eye on your pup for some of the most serious issues, like Liver Shunt and HGE. |

| We're not on here to scare anyone but to get help, share stories and learn, teach if we have anything to share. There are way more owners of healthy dogs as members this forum than ones posting of their sickly or unhealthy ones but it's those of us who need guidance, more information or want to share our fears/need support about our sick dog naturally post more. I'd try not to worry - chances are if you buy from a reputable, respected breeder you will get a healthy dog. And because of this forum, we can all raise and care for our dogs far more responsibly than we ever could without it.

| I think your gonna always hear more bad then good with most stuff but people normally find YorkieTalk when the need help with something or are searching for something. It is also why you want to find a good reputable breeder who does the testing and knows there lines far back to know there doing everything they can to have healthy pups. It's also a good idea to get pet insurance incase your pup does have health issues.

| Thank you everyone for the advice. I did indeed find a reputable breeder and she even gives a 1 year health guarantee. I've also been checking out the pet insurance posts but can't decide because of too many choices. I'll figure this thing out. Thank you guys. |

| Welcome to YT. You have received excellent advice above. Being owned by a yorkie is an education in itself. YT makes us aware of what can happen and gives us tips on how to train and care for our little ones. The book mentioned above is an excellent beginning.
